PlayStation had a massive 2023, with the PS5 shattering multiple records. Aside from first-party releases, such as the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy XVI, Sony launched a new console revision three years into the PS5’s lifecycle.
PSVR 2 was released in February, and the portable PlayStation Portal was released later in November. A slim version of the PlayStation 5, which features a detachable disc drive, was also launched in the same month.
To round up last year’s games on PlayStation, here are the top 5 games released on both the PS4 and PS5 in 2023. Quite surprisingly, the best games were multiplatform titles.
5. Rogue Legacy 2
Rogue Legacy 2 succeeds upon the legacy of its predecessor, released almost a decade ago. While the PlayStation version was released a year after the PC version, it encapsulated everyone’s attention due to its unique rogue-like gameplay found in other games like Hades and Returnal.
Rogue Legacy 2 stands out from other games due to its hand-drawn visuals and a variety of customizable classes that will keep players entertained throughout the gameplay. For all these reasons and more, Rogue Legacy received a whopping score of 90/100 on Metacritic.
4. Street Fighter 6
2023 was a memorable year for fighting games with big releases such as Mortal Kombat 1. However, Street Fighter 6 has to be the biggest name on the list, selling over 2 million units.
Being regarded as one of the best entries in the franchise, Street Fighter 6 reinvents the franchise by introducing a drive system, a new combat mechanic allowing special attacks. A freely explorable open world outside the battle arena also ensures fans of offline gameplay have plenty to do in this iteration of the series.
The game’s best part has to be the cross-platform multiplayer mode, featuring a battle hub that will put up your custom avatar against your friends. Overall, Street Fighter 6 sets the bar high for modern fighting games by scoring a solid 92/100 on Metacritic.
3. Resident Evil 4
Another spot in the top 5 is taken by Capcom, thanks to the faithful remake of Resident Evil 4. This game needs no introduction, cementing its name as one of the best video games ever.
Following the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, Capcom’s remake of the fourth mainline entry was a love letter to the original game, introducing it to newer audiences while keeping the same nostalgia and appeal alive.
Leaning more towards the action genre while keeping the same gory and horror elements, Resident Evil 4’s remake has taken modern horror games to new heights with an astonishing rating of 93/100 on Metacritic.
2. Tetris Effect: Connected
One of the very first video games, the puzzle arranging game has a rich history with multiple releases across various platforms. Tetris: Effect, released in 2021, was launched two years later on PS5 after PSVR 2 came out.
Tetris Effect: Connected adds more features to the classic puzzle arranging system by introducing a multiplayer mode and new staggering visuals. With Tetris, there isn’t any room for failure, and the latest game received an excellent score of 93/100.
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
Since its release, Baldur’s Gate 3 has taken the gaming world by storm. Being in early access for almost three years, the game was finally released in August of 2023 and almost hit a million concurrent players on PC alone.
Larian Studios set the bar high for RPG games by portraying a scale never seen before. Baldur’s Gate 3 features almost 17K potential endings and a whopping 174 hours of cinematics that require several playthroughs to experience.
It would be fair to call Baldur’s Gate 3 the best game of this decade so far, and there are only a few titles that come close to it. The game finished 2023 as the highest-rated release of the year, so its position on this list is hardly a surprise.
This list is based on critic reviews and only mentions the top 5 games. Elsewhere, games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finished just shy of the top games, while notable releases like Alan Wake 2 and Dead Space are not far behind either.
As for other big PS5 releases from 2023, God of War: Ragnarok Valhalla is the newest free DLC that concludes Kratos’ saga as the God of War and is better than most paid DLCs. We absolutely recommend you check it out!
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is also worth a mention, even though the narrow-focused DLC didn’t make it too high on the list. Burning Shores utilizes the next-generation PS5 hardware to the fullest, featuring some of the best visuals seen on the console.
