GIGABYTE formally announced the launch of its new top-of-the-line SSD, the AORUS Gen5 10000 featuring a PCI-Express 5.0 x4 interface along with the use of the Phison E26 controller to achieve high speeds. Added to this is the use of 3D TLC NAND Flash memory chips and a cache in the form of DDR4 DRAM.

All these combined results in an SSD that promises to reach a maximum speed of 10 Gbps. Although it is promised that its energy consumption will be less than 10W, it is clear that the beefy cooling system already warns that they want to avoid overheating problems. 

This will be the trend if you don’t want to avoid bottlenecks or of course, add a small fan that ends up generating discomfort linked to the noise it generates.

Like virtually all PCIe 5.0 SSDs, this SSD is also based on the Phison E26 controller (Phison PS5026-E26 8-channel) attached to 3D TLC NAND Flash memory chips with a 200-layer design. 

All this combined, promises to generate read speeds of up to 10 GB/s, and up to 9.5 GB/s in writing with a useful life of 1,400 TBW. This is at least on the 2TB capacity drive. The 1TB drive will be capable of read speeds of up to 9.5GB/s with write speeds of up to 8.5GB/s. Durability is halved, i.e. 700TB of data written.

High Speeds Linked To Generous Sized Heatsink

Just yesterday we were commenting that the first PCIe 5.0 SSD to hit the market had a major disadvantage, it was very noisy. That unit uses an aluminum heatsink linked to a small fan to reduce temperatures. 

In the case of the GIGABYTE AORUS Gen5 10000, we don’t have a simple aluminum heatsink here. Specifically, we have a large aluminum radiator traversed by two 6 mm thick copper heat pipes. These heat pipes quickly transfer the heat generated by the unit to the aluminum fins. 

Thanks to its good height, it is easy for the airflow of the system to pass through these fins and help its cooling without the need to add a fan that adds more noise to the system.

Unfortunately, even though it is now the supposed official launch, GIGABYTE has not disclosed its availability date in stores, nor the price at which its units arrive. At least we know that the unit comes backed by a 5-year warranty.
