A Western Digital Xbox 1TB expansion card was listed on Best Buy for sale. Typically, Microsoft manufactures expansion cards exclusively in collaboration with Seagate. This means that the expansion card may have been listed before an official announcement, which might come sooner than initially planned.
According to the product’s description, the expansion card is officially licensed by Microsoft and appears to be available only in a 1TB storage size that costs $179.99. This is comparatively cheaper than Seagate’s 1TB expansion card, which costs $40 more.
The Xbox Series S comes with 512GB of storage, while the more expensive console comes with 1TB of storage.
With the latest games being quite hefty in size, the standard storage space tends to run out quite fast. The Xbox Series consoles can utilize these proprietary expansion cards to increase the console’s storage.
However, a negative to this approach is that storage can be quite expensive. Microsoft first developed expansion cards exclusively with the help of Seagate. Therefore, having more than one manufacturer may help bring down the expansion card’s price.
Xbox owners can also use external storage on the Xbox Series S|X consoles. However, newer games require internal storage to be played. This means that users must transfer games back and forth, while games from Xbox One and older consoles can be played directly.
As such, the expansion cards can be an excellent option for users looking to expand storage and will likely become a popular option if Microsoft can ensure a rapid decline in pricing through multiple manufacturers.
What are your thoughts on the new price? Will you be buying it for your Xbox?
