The next generation of Nintendo consoles has been a hot topic. Nintendo’s long-awaited successor to the Nintendo Switch is expected to arrive soon, and a recent job listing suggests that the company is already working on software support for the console.
The job listing comes from NERD (Nintendo European Research & Development), a Nintendo subsidiary specializing in software and emulation. The listing mentions “Cross-Platform Development,” implying that they may be developing games across multiple platforms, including the current Nintendo Switch and its potential successor.
The job listing states:
“Aim for and go beyond state-of-the-art solutions, targeting current and next
generation Nintendo platforms.”
The “Cross-Platform Development” could also mean that Nintendo intends for all the current Nintendo Switch Online content to be carried over to their next console rather than starting from scratch again.
Although the job listing refers to “next-generation Nintendo platforms,” it does not provide any information about the hardware capabilities of the upcoming console. But we know that NERD is collaborating with Nintendo on the development of this console.
However, this might mean that Nintendo’s upcoming console is nearly ready, and the team already has access to it for software development. Cross-platform development could also point to a similar architecture for the upcoming console, making development easier.
Nintendo has been due for a new console for quite some time now, as the current Nintendo Switch is starting to show its age in terms of hardware capabilities.
With promising competitors like the Steam Deck and the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally packing powerful hardware, Nintendo may need to deliver a new console with equally impressive hardware capabilities to stay competitive in the handheld console market.
According to an earlier leak, the Switch 2 rivals the PlayStation 4 in terms of hardware and supports 4k/30 FPS, but it would be best to take leaks with a grain of salt until confirmation.
