First released in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has dominated the console market for the past seven years. However, the latest financial reports reveal a decline in Nintendo Switch’s sales last year, and despite that, Nintendo will not be releasing a new console this fiscal year.
Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch has just entered its 7th year of launch and has started to show its age in newer titles. Previous rumors and reports claimed that the Switch successor is close to launching, but the company’s president revealed that a new console would not launch this fiscal year.
First reported by Bloomberg, the company’s latest financial reports revealed that the Nintendo Switch faced a 22% sale decline this year and failed to meet the company’s expected sales target of 21 million consoles this year, selling only 17.91 million units.
The company expects another 16.5% decline in the next fiscal year and is not confident in hitting the 15 Million sale target next year. In a statement provided to Bloomberg, the company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, said:
“our goal is to have more consumers continue to play Nintendo Switch for longer, leading to maximized sales,”
Furukawa also added that no new or upgraded hardware would release within this fiscal year.
Previously, A Nintendo Switch Pro was also rumored to release sometime in 2024 alongside PlayStation 5 Pro. This can still happen during the latter part of the year, but fans will need to wait much longer than expected.
The decline in hardware sales could be due to Nintendo Switch showing its age in newer titles and increasing its gap with the latest console generation. With competitors like the Steam Deck and the upcoming Asus Rog Ally launching soon, the market for handheld consoles will be tough.
However, it seems Nintendo will be stretching Switch’s life a bit before releasing the next console. A previous job posting hinted at next-generation Nintendo hardware, which mentioned cross-generation game development for Switch and its successor.
