The Last of Us Multiplayer Delayed; Team Also Scaled Down

The Last of Us Multiplayer In Trouble?

The Last of Us Multiplayer was initially supposed to be an additional mode for The Last of Us Part 2. However, it eventually grew more ambitious, and Naughty Dog decided to make it a stand-alone multiplayer game.

Having been in development for several years, fans have learned surprisingly little about the game. Recent reports from Bloomberg also point to a concerning future for the game, and Naughty Dog’s latest update seems to indicate a delay.

Why it matters: Naughty Dog is among PlayStation’s best first-party studios, and their games have been some of the finest for each console generation.

Following a disappointing PlayStation Showcase, Naughty Dog provided an update on its projects. According to the developer, The Last of Us Multiplayer needs more development time.

However, the popular Bloomberg reporter, Jason Schreier, elaborated on this update, stating that Naughty Dog’s development has not been going too well. The report states that Sony has slowed the development of the project.

This also includes a reevaluation of the game. Naughty Dog has shifted developers from the project, leaving a small team to work on The Last of Us Multiplayer as they consider a new direction for the game.

PlayStation is currently investing heavily in live-service games across different first-party studios. The Last of Us Multiplayer was expected to be the biggest and safest part of this push from PlayStation.

With a popular franchise and exceptional developer, there was little doubt about the multiplayer game becoming a massive success. Naughty Dog was also expected to lead the new wave of live-service games from the console manufacturer.

However, the game’s future remains uncertain for now.

On the bright side, the game is still alive, as it has not been canceled. Naughty Dog also confirmed a new single-player adventure from the studio, so fans can continue to look forward to more content from the developer.
