StarCraft is one of the most acclaimed real-time strategy games from Activision Blizzard. Despite its popularity, the franchise has not been revisited in over a decade. However, a new report claims that a new entry in the series might be in development.
Why it matters: A new entry would be exciting for longtime fans. It would also introduce the series to new audiences, potentially leading to a massive surge in popularity.
Jez Corden, a reputable insider, recently held a Q&A session on Twitter. During the session, a fan asked if Microsoft intends to revive the StarCraft franchise.
For the unfamiliar, Microsoft is very close to acquiring Activision Blizard. This would give the company ownership of existing Activision Blizzard IPs like Call of Duty, Diablo, Candy Crush, and StarCraft.
Replying in a now-deleted tweet, Jez Corden said that they wouldn’t need to, implying that a StarCraft game is already in development at Blizzard. Another fan replied, expressing their curiosity about the possibility of the game being StarCraft 3.
This time Jez was asked if he was referring to StarCraft 3, and he replied:
“Yep.”
While Jez has been a very reliable leaker in the past, taking this leak with a grain of salt is advisable until official confirmation.
Adding to the rumors, last year, Simu Liu, a famous actor known for his work on Shang-Chi, took to Twitter and said:
“Please Save StarCraft.”
In response, the president of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Ybarra, replied with a smiling face emoji. Mike also shared an old StarCraft t-shirt on Twitter a while later, leaving fans excited and curious.
This gesture strongly indicates that StarCraft will soon be making a comeback.

With Diablo’s recent comeback and success, it is not surprising that Blizzard would be inclined to revisit older franchises. Previously, Phil Spencer has also hinted at a potential revival of StarCraft.
BlizzCon 2023 is set to return this year after being canceled in the past few years due to the pandemic. StarCraft 3 could potentially be announced at the upcoming in-person event.
Following Microsoft’s buyout of Activision, the company could revisit other Activision IPs besides StarCraft. The gaming giant has shown interest in older through initiatives like the Xbox Backward Compatibility program.
