Assassin’s Creed Red is the next mainline installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, following this year’s release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, scheduled to launch in October.
While Mirage is a nostalgic nod to the older Assassin’s Creed games and will not incorporate RPG mechanics, the next title will revive the RPG formula introduced in Origins. It is also expected to be the last Assassin’s Creed game with this formula.
Earlier reports suggested that Assassin’s Creed Red would have two playable protagonists. While the report appears to be accurate, a correction reveals the game will feature a male samurai and a female shinobi as the main characters.
Why it matters: Fans have requested an Assassin’s Creed game in Japan for over a decade. However, Ubisoft had not shown much interest in the setting. This changed after the success of recent games like Ghost of Tsushima.
The male samurai is an African refugee already familiar with the Creed. As such, including samurai and shinobi, Assassin’s Creed Red will heavily focus on stealth and melee combat, likely satisfying fans of both playstyles.
While the last two Assassin’s Creed games provided the option to choose between a male and a female protagonist, Assassin’s Creed Red will feature both as playable characters simultaneously.
This would make it similar to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, which allowed players to switch between Jacob and Evie Frye.
While the upcoming Ubisoft game does not have a release date or a trailer yet, a previous LinkedIn post suggested the game could arrive in 2024. Furthermore, Ubisoft claims Assassin’s Creed Red will be the biggest blockbuster for next year, which will see major releases like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
