Annual PS Plus Essential Now Starts At $80!

PlayStation has officially announced the monthly PS Plus offerings for September. In addition to games like Black Desert Traveler Edition, Generation Zero, and Saints Row 2022, the gaming giant has revised prices for the 12-month subscriptions.

The yearly plans have seen a price increase across the board, with the 12-month PS Plus Essential plan now priced at $79.99.

Why it matters: PS Plus is required for online gameplay on PS4 and PS5 consoles, making it an essential part of the PlayStation gaming platform.

PlayStation confirms the new prices will take effect from September 6. However, existing owners of a 12-month plan will be able to renew subscriptions for prior prices if the renewal is scheduled before November 6.

Following the changes, the most expensive PS Plus Premium tier will cost $159.99 for 12 months. This tier offers access to classic games from the PSP, PS1, PS2 and streaming capabilities for PS3 games.

The cheapest tier of PlayStation’s subscription has always been considered great value for the monthly offerings. However, some may find the latest price increase disappointing.

On the other hand, the new price is expected to motivate PlayStation to improve its monthly game offerings, potentially leading to high-quality games from the current-generation library of the PS5.

The PlayStation Blog states:

“This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your subscription.”

In terms of the prices, the PS Plus Premium subscription has seen the most notable change. Following the changes, users looking to buy this tier will pay $40 more than the previous price.

A recent rumor claimed that PlayStation is working on a revamped PS2 emulator for new consoles. This may be one of the reasons for the price increase, suggesting a higher quality of classic games in the coming days.
