NBA 2K24 is the latest iteration of the famous basketball franchise from publisher 2K. The game was just released worldwide on September 8, but it has not been as well-received as 2K may have hoped.
Following a troubled release, NBA 2K24 received widespread criticism, making it the second-worst-rated game on the platform. However, the outrage from Steam users did not stop there.
NBA 2K24 is now the worst-rated game on Steam.
Why it matters: Sports games are among the best-selling titles in the industry, and the NBA 2K franchise is among 2K’s most profitable annual releases.
Until recently, Overwatch 2 held the position of Steam’s worst-reviewed game. The title was released on the platform last month but was bombarded with numerous negative reviews.
However, Steam250 reports NBA2K24 has replaced Overwatch on the list for the top spot. Only 8% of 4,375 user reviews are currently positive, leading to over 92% negative reviews on Steam.
Criticisms for the game range from complaints about rampant cheating to a lack of cross-play in key modes and more. The PC version of NBA 2K24 is also based on an obsolete last-generation version of the game.
This has added to the growing frustrations from the NBA community, and the $60 asking price from 2K does little to address the problem. Additionally, crucial new features like ProPLAY are not included in the PC version.
This is because of the inferior version on PC compared to its current-generation console counterparts. Steam is home to millions of users, but it appears 2K has not given the platform much importance.
While sports games are dominantly enjoyed on consoles, studios like EA have recently made strides for their sports games on PC.
Unlike NBA 2K24, Fifa 23 delivers the same current-generation feature set on PC and the latest consoles, leading to further disappointment from fans of the basketball gaming franchise.
Following such reception, NBA 2K24 has failed to accumulate an impressive number of players on Steam.
The game has peaked at under 12K concurrent players, while its predecessor had over 59K concurrent players enjoying the game just a few months ago.
