Marvel’s Avengers hoped to capitalize on the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the incredible buzz around superhero movies a few years ago.

Following the release of Avengers: Endgame, many had hoped Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics would continue Marvel’s momentum through a worthy gaming adaptation, revitalizing the IP again, much like 2012’s The Avengers.

However, the game was not as successful as Square Enix had hoped, and Marvel’s Avengers is set to be permanently removed from storefronts by the end of September, but the game is currently on sale for the last time.

As noted by Wario64, Marvel’s Avengers is down to less than $5 on major platforms like Steam and PlayStation, and Xbox users with Game Pass Core can buy the game at the same price.

For the price, Marvel’s Avengers offers significantly more content than it did at release. Being a live-service title, the game received additional playable characters like Black Panther and Hawkeye.

The PlayStation version of the game offers exclusive access to Spider-Man, adding one more hero to the already large cast of characters. New players will also find all previous cosmetic items included in the game, as they were given away for free in March.

Earlier this year, Crystal Dynamics confirmed support for the game was nearing its end. One last major update was released on March 31 after the studio confirmed it would move away from the project after September 2023.

Marvel’s Avengers will be delisted from digital storefronts on September 30, bringing an end to the tragic and disappointing appearance of Earth’s mightiest heroes in the gaming industry.

Developers like Cezar Virtosu recently acknowledged the game’s disappointment, apologizing for what turned out to be a difficult project for everyone involved.

Marvel’s Avengers is among the many recent failures of the live service industry, joining games like CrossfireX and Rumbleverse in the wave of shutdowns after failures across the genre.

While the Avengers may not return for a new game in the coming years, superhero games have found themselves in a great place in 2023.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is releasing next month, and Insomniac Games is expected to accelerate work on Marvel’s Wolverine later this year. EA Motive is working on a single-player Iron Man game, and a brand-new studio led by veteran developers has also embarked on a new Black Panther project.
