Final Fantasy 16 is the latest entry in a long-running JRPG franchise. Much like its predecessors, the game was met with unprecedented hype and anticipation prior to its release and sold over 3 million units in the first week.

While this was far from unimpressive, the game’s sales figures have become somewhat controversial. Final Fantasy 16 has sparked debates about its success, with Square Enix going back and forth about its expectations for the JRPG release.

The gaming giant initially claimed that Final Fantasy 16 sold well, but recent reports claimed that higher-ups were led down with the sales results. Following the back and forth, Square Enix has claimed the title sold in line with expectations.

Why it matters: Final Fantasy is a flagship franchise for Square Enix, having sold over 180 million units worldwide.

Square Enix recently released its financial results briefing, addressing its recent performance and position in the gaming market. When Final Fantasy 16 was brought up, Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu stated:

“This achievement was in line with our expectations.”

The achievement referred to the 3 million sales during the initial launch window. Much of the buzz surrounding Final Fantasy 16 has since died down in the wake of new and upcoming releases in 2023.

However, Square Enix has plans to ensure another run of impressive sales and excitement for the title. President Takashi Kiryu said that further initiatives were planned to motivate PS5 buyers to purchase the game.

This likely includes initiatives like discounts during promotions and crossovers with Creative Business Unit 3’s Final Fantasy 14 MMO.

In addition to potential buyers on the PS5, Square Enix hopes to entice PC users to buy Final Fantasy 16 soon. A PC version of the game began development recently, likely targeting a 2024 release.

The gaming giant is still very passionate about the franchise, taking fan feedback into consideration. Following the demand for expansion of the lore, Square Enix has also announced 2 new DLC packs for the latest Final Fantasy entry.

Apart from the recent release, Square Enix showcased Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth last week, alongside the announcement of its release date.

The game is a 3-month timed exclusive for the PS5 and will offer around 100 hours of content for the fans, marking another exciting launch in the popular franchise.
