- A source claims AMD is gearing up to lay off 10-15% of its Chinese workforce, which is around 300 to 450 people.
- The layoffs will impact RTG or the Radeon Technology Group the most.
Update:
According to a statement from AMD, no layoffs have been conducted. The company claims to have made a few adjustments and reorganizations but does not plan to lay off any workers.
Original Story:
AMD is among the leading producers of processors, graphics cards, and more. While it operates all over the world, the company appears to have taken a hit to its business in China.
After the recent sanctions between China and the USA, which led to the ban on GeForce RTX 4090 exports, AMD appears to have carried out a series of layoffs in China. According to iCsmart, the company will lay off 10-15% of its Chinese employees.
Why it matters: Layoffs have been prevalent throughout the world this year. Whether it be Microsoft, Sony, or Epic Games, nobody appears to be safe from this sad trend.
The 10-15% figure comes out to around 300 to 450 workers. These measures are anticipated to impact the Radeon Technology Group severely, with most of the laid-off employees coming from RTG.
The source believes the Shanghai R&D center will be the most heavily impacted by these measures. This center has been operational since 2006, making it nearly two decades old.
While the Chinese market may not be AMD’s biggest region, the company employs around 3,000 workers in China. These workers operate in various departments, aiding the development of CPUs, GPUs, and more.
The decision to cut workers is interesting since AMD is already much smaller than its competition in China. Still, Chinese employees have been crucial to the development of technologies like the Ryzen & Radeon products.
The layoffs could impact multiple sectors, even extending to AI research. Interestingly, no layoffs have been noted in other parts of the world, potentially hinting that AMD might have suffered unexpected losses in the region.
