Nintendo Says Switch Won’t Be Bound By Platform Lifecycle

Wants To Continue Releasing Games In Future!

Story Highlights
  • Nintendo hopes to continue releasing games for the Switch in 2024 and beyond.
  • The Nintendo Switch successor is rumored to arrive next year.
  • This could mean that the first batch of Nintendo games for the new console will be cross-gen titles.

The Nintendo Switch has been a truly remarkable endeavor for the gaming giant. Through a unique concept of merging two types of gaming experiences and a rich library of first-party games, this console has thrived on the market.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, the company was expected to move on soon. However, the Nintendo president has issued an interesting statement recently, pointing to extended support for the console for next year and beyond.

Why it matters: Having sold over 132.46 million units, the console has firmly established itself among the biggest names in the industry.

Nintendo Switch

Following its latest earnings report, the company acknowledged that the Nintendo Switch would begin its eighth year on the market in March 2024. President Shuntaro Furukawa then said:

“We will continue to release new titles without being bound by the traditional concept of platform lifecycle.”

This statement might appear odd, considering the fact that Nintendo is expected to launch its next console in 2024.

However, it is possible that Nintendo hopes to follow in Sony and Microsoft’s footsteps, pointing to an extended period of cross-gen games for the Nintendo Switch and its successor.

Last generation, the gaming giant instantly left the Wii U behind since the console did not find much success. With millions of Nintendo Switch consoles out in the wild today, this may not seem feasible for the company.

Previously, the president confirmed that support was planned till 2025 at least, but the fact that he does not intend to be bound by the traditional lifecycle might imply that it will last even longer.

Nintendo also confirmed recent releases like Super Mario Wonder have already sold over 4 million units. Therefore, president Shuntaro Furukawa hopes to continue this momentum moving forward.

In the future, Nintendo fans can anticipate the likes of Super Mario RPG and Princess Peach Showtime for the console.

As for the Nintendo Switch successor, the console is shaping up to be much more capable than its predecessor. According to an estimate, it may handle games at 1080p with ray tracing.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see if the console is limited by the success of its predecessor.
