60% Performance Boost Expected Without RT!

Story Highlights
  • The PS5 Pro will be Sony’s second mid-gen refresh after the PS4 Pro.
  • This console is expected to ship with a Zen 2 CPU, an RDNA 3 GPU, and RDNA 4 ray tracing features.
  • New hardware will lead to around 2x ray tracing performance.
  • A release is expected in late 2024, but nothing has been announced officially yet.

With the latest games like Alan Wake 2 pushing the boundaries of current-generation consoles, Sony is expected to introduce the PS5 Pro for those looking to improve their console experience.

Following rumored PS5 Pro dev kits, a new leak provides more information about the console and its internal specifications.  According to a report from Reset Era, the Zen 2 CPU (codenamed Viola) present in the current PS5 will be retained in the Pro version.

Why it matters: While both PlayStation and Xbox introduced more powerful hardware last generation, Phil Spencer has denied a refresh of the Xbox Series S|X. This makes the PS5 Pro even more interesting since it will have no real competition.

While the Zen 2 architecture is expected to return, the frequency will once again be dynamic, possibly peaking at 4.4GHz. The chip will also come with 8 MB of shared L3 cache (4 MB per CCX).

It has been reported that the PS5 Pro will be limited to 28 WGPs (56 CUs). The three primary technologies that make up the PS5 Pro are hardware-accelerated ray tracing, picture reconstruction/up-sampling, and fast storage.

While the PS5 Pro uses RDNA 4 ray tracing features, the source confirms that the GPU architecture of the device is based on RDNA 3. Instead of relying solely on the shaders, BVH traversal will be managed by dedicated RT hardware.

The report adds that the PS5 Pro GPU frequency is targeted at 2.0 GHz. This could lead to around 28.67 TFLOPs at best but could be limited to just 14.33 TFLOPs without considering the dual-issue factor.

Furthermore, with a memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s and a 256-bit memory interface, the console will be equipped with 16 GB of 18 GBps GDDR6 memory, resulting in a 50-60% rasterization uplift over Oberon and Oberon Plus, in addition to twice the raw RT performance.

Sony’s exclusive temporal machine learning upscaling method will also run more quickly because of the inclusion of the XDNA2 NPU. Similar to the checkboard rendering on the PS4 Pro, this will be a primary focus of the PS5 Pro.

For now, there is no official news about the mid-gen refresh console from Sony, but with Tom Henderson claiming dev kits are being sent soon, the complete specifications may be revealed soon.

In the past, the leaker correctly reported about the PS5 Slim and the PlayStation Portal. Based on past leaks, the PS5 Pro will be leaked in 2025, helping Sony enhance demanding games like GTA 6 since this particular title is expected to run at 30FPS on consoles.
