Cyberpunk 2077 recently turned three and has been through a roller coaster ride since its launch. While the expectations were very high for the game, it saw one of the most disastrous launches in gaming history.

Fans were quick to move on from the game, but the recent hard work from the developers has changed everything. This has led many to believe Cyberpunk 2077 would be crowned Game of the Year if it came out in its current state.

Why it matters: Cyberpunk 2077 became one of the worst examples of a rushed release in 2020. This meant it had no chance of being a Game of the Year contender at the time of release.

What makes me sad when I realize it is that Cyberpunk 2077 could have been GOTY if it hadn’t been messed up at release. Because everything else in this game is more than worth it. What do

One fan recently took to Reddit and discussed the possibility of CD Projekt RED winning Game of the Year for this title.

This post was made before the team launched Update 2.0, which practically revamped the core systems of the RPG. Phantom Liberty also added a new story, receiving incredible reviews that the team had sought in 2020.

It should be noted that Cyberpunk 2077 came out in late 2020. Therefore, the game would have been nominated for The Game Awards in 2021, sweeping the competition.

In 2021, It Takes Two was given this title. While this game was incredible in its own right, it would have likely struggled to compete with a polished version of CD Projekt RED’s latest title.

Fans agreed that this would have been the case, but they don’t appear to be too bothered. They believe winning an award does not matter much in the long run, with one comment stating:

“Winning an award doesn’t make a game better. Cyberpunk will go down in gaming history as a cult classic, the start of an exciting new franchise.”

We believe Cyberpunk 2077 could have also been nominated for the award in 2023. Although there was no shortage of competition, Phantom Liberty was already a massive release of the year.

If the game came with a complete offering, impressive technology like DLSS 3.5 and Path Tracing, and polished versions on all platforms, it would be hard to deny its nomination as Game of the Year.

Still, the game has been through an incredible journey of redemption in 2023. With over 500K positive reviews on Steam and 25 million copies sold, CD Projekt RED has been able to conclude this title’s rocky journey on a positive note.

We are glad to see the optimism around the title in 2023. Not only is the game a technological marvel, but it also serves as a reminder of the team’s commitment to their projects.

While it may not have won Game of the Year, Cyberpunk 2077 has been remembered as a massive part of gaming in 2023.

CD Projekt RED recently confirmed that it released the game’s last update, with the developers now looking over to The Witcher 4 and the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
