Final Fantasy had a big year in 2023. Releasing its 16th mainline entry, this franchise ascended to the current generation of consoles, selling over 3 million units on the PS5.

With a Final Fantasy 16 PC port in development and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth scheduled for launch in the first quarter, 2024 is already shaping up to be an even better year. Ahead of the latter’s release, the director has teased incredible moments for this game.

Why it matters: This franchise is filled to the brim with legendary stories and iconic moments, making it challenging for new games to surprise players who are already familiar with the older titles.

A new preview for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released recently, discussing parts of the game like its 100-hour total playtime, RPG elements, and open world.

Looking back at the time spent with Square Enix and the developers, a recent podcast from GameInformer mentioned an awe-inspiring moment in the game. According to the podcast, the game is shaping up to be something special, and director Naoki Hamaguchi thinks:

“people are going to lose their mind at what happens in this game.”

He went on to confirm that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has led to new levels of confidence for him as a developer. With Naoki Hamaguchi being involved in the IP for over a decade, this is certainly a bold statement.

Since Square Enix is taking a different approach to the narrative and characters in the remake trilogy, the director may have teased an exciting twist in the story. He stated that a specific moment will leave audiences in awe.

The podcast mentioned that Naoki Hamaguchi’s confidence was also reflected in the decision to ship the game with two discs. While the team could have scaled the game back to fit in on one disc, the vision was so ambitious that there was little room for compromise.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth draws inspiration from various sources to redefine the pillars of this IP. While initially derived from traditional JRPGs, the director looked toward Western games like The Witcher 3 to create an immersive open-world experience.

This is just one of the many ways this title sets itself apart from the numerous entries in this series.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be available on 29 February. Initially, the game will launch as a PS5 exclusive, but with a very small exclusivity window of just three months, the JRPG should arrive on PC soon after.
