RTX 4070 Super Shows Today’s Mid-Range GPUs 2x Faster Than PS5

Is 2x Performance Justified For The Cost?

Story Highlights
  • GeForce RTX 4070 Super shows double the performance of PS5 at identical settings.
  • The RTX 4070 Super costs about $600 compared to the $500 PS5.
  • The performance gain is quite noticeable since the PS5 is still a very recent console.

Digital Foundry has dropped a brand new video comparing the performance of the recently launched GeForce RTX 4070 Super against the PS5.

While there is a three-year gap between the two releases, Nvidia’s latest $600 graphics card outpaces the PS5 by a considerable margin, showing a 2x lead in several comparisons.

Why it matters: Testing showed that the PS5 was equivalent to a GeForce RTX 2070 Super, which is 2 generations old now. Therefore, Nvidia has made impressive leaps in just four years.

The video starts by comparing Cyberpunk 2077. Using console equivalent settings for performance mode at a dynamic resolution, with the lowest target falling to 1008p using FSR 2 upscaling, the PS5 can consistently output 60FPS.

However, the GeForce RTX 4070 can easily manage 120FPS, even exceeding this target in most cases. This output can be further increased when using DLSS3, but this is not needed for the comparison.

A similar lead is observed in Alan Wake 2, arguably last year’s most visually impressive game. At identical settings, the GeForce RTX 4070 Super is 2x faster. The likes of A Plague Tale: Requiem also exhibit double the performance for the Super graphics card.

However, this lead is not as massive in The Last of Us Part 1. Here, the PS5 outputs around 35-38FPS, while the Nvidia graphics card stays close to 50FPS. Still, there is quite a lead for the GPU in all scenarios.

PlayStation 5 Slim

While this difference is undoubtedly massive, the PS5 ends up being much cheaper as a package. Starting at $450, not only is it cheaper than the GeForce RTX 4070 Super outright, but the latter also needs a full PC build.

Still, PC gamers get what they pay for. The performance jump is huge, especially when combined with upscaling technologies like DLSS 3. Sony’s upcoming PS5 Pro may bridge the gap later this year, but the RTX 4070 Super will stay relevant for a very long time.

While it is a shame that a card priced at $600 is considered mid-range, this is the direction the industry is heading in after all the inflation.  For what it offers at its price, the GeForce RTX 4070 Super will do a fine job handling everything you throw at it, even if its price is not the best.
