AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU Runs Fortnite At 1080p/132FPS

APUs Highly Appealing For 1080p Gaming Amid Rising GPU Prices

Story Highlights
  • AMD has just launched the Ryzen 7 8700G APU.
  • This APU packs the Radeon 780M GPU, capable of handling games like Fortnite at 1080p.
  • Testing shows Fortnite can run at 132FPS on average with low settings.

Following earlier leaks, AMD has released its latest desktop APUs. The Ryzen 7 8700G is shaping up to be the most impressive of the bunch, thanks to its impressive gaming performance.

With its eight Zen 4 processing cores and support for simultaneous multithreading (SMT), the Ryzen 7 8700G features 8 cores and 16 threads. Under ideal circumstances, the processor cores can reach up to 5.1GHz of boost speed from its base frequency of 4.2GHz.

The Ryzen 8700G also comes with integrated Radeon 780M graphics.

Why it matters: APUs have been evolving at an incredible rate. The latest release shows more progress from AMD in this sector of the market.

It consists of twelve compute units (CUs), each of which has 64 streaming processors, or 768 shaders, in total.

Alongside them are twelve ray-tracing cores, thirty-two raster operation processors (ROPs), and forty-eight texture mapping units (TMUs). The RDNA 3 graphics architecture serves as the foundation for the new Ryzen 7 8700G APU.

According to testing from Hardware Unboxed, this APU will hit an average of 119 frames per second at 1080p with medium quality in Counter-Strike 2. In Fortnite, the Ryzen 7 8700G achieves an incredible 132 frames per second on average at 1080p with low graphics settings.

More demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 also run reasonably well. At 1080p low settings, the Ryzen 7 8700G delivers 41FPS. For a game that pushed last-gen consoles to their limits, these results are not to be taken lightly.

Still, games with less demanding graphics are where the Ryzen 7 8700G shines.

The only drawback of the Ryzen 7 8700G is the cost. It currently retails at $329 and is a lot more expensive than most other APUs. Similar performance can also be achieved with a dedicated graphics card for cheaper.

However, it serves to show how far APU technology has come today. 1080p high refresh rate gaming no longer requires a dedicated graphics card. In time, prices should also come down, making such APUs more accessible.
