Hellblade 2 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated games of the year. The game puts Senua back in the nightmarish world, tackling her demons and continuing the story left off by the first game.

As expected, early previews of Hellblade 2 are extremely positive.

Why it matters: The original Hellblade was excellent since it captured the horrifying state of mental illness as no game could. Since the trailers for the sequel dropped, fans have been ecstatic to get their hands on the game.

According to the previews, Hellblade 2 is a major step forward for the series, showing how the franchise has evolved since Ninja Theory’s first entry came out seven years ago.

The sequel dials up the visuals using the power of Unreal Engine 5. It looks crisp and sharp, with excellent character models and a horrifying world. Additionally, the voices in Senua’s head are back, and if you have a decent audio output, the game promises new levels of immersion.

Then there’s the combat. The fight sequences in the original game were a bit linear; you were mostly doing the same thing repeatedly. Hellblade 2, on the other hand, goes for a more weighty approach, offering more impact with each blow.

The combat took over 70 hours to motion capture compared to just 2 days for the original. This difference is immediately obvious and is a common theme across the whole game.

Ninja Theory has also expanded the enemy variety.

The puzzles that require you to focus on shapes to open the doors are back. They can be really enjoyable and require a bit of exploration but by no means feel tedious.

However, this section of the game has also been expanded. Overall, the Hellblade 2 previews suggest that Ninja Theory will again hit the mark with a brilliant and horrifying cinematic experience.

The previews make us even more thrilled to try the title. This could be the game that Xbox had been looking for all along, ahead of recent claims about Microsoft expecting a Metacritic score of 90/100.
