Call Of Duty 2025 Should Pay Homage To Black Ops 2

2025 Is The Year of Black Ops 2!

Story Highlight
  • Call of Duty Black Ops 2 launched nearly 12 years ago and took place in 2025.
  • Next year’s Call of Duty will finally catch up to this setting, so Activision has a chance to pay homage to this classic.
  • The game is considered one of the best Call of Duty titles, so it deserves all the respect it can get.

Although every Call of Duty title has a massive fanbase, whether it be the genre-defining Modern Warfare series or the older World War games, the Black Ops franchise continues to stand out for its risky and often innovative approach.

In 2012, Treyarch debuted the first futuristic Call of Duty game, completely changing the IP. Black Ops 2 was set in 2025, and nearly thirteen years later, we have finally caught up to this setting.

Suffice to say, the year 2025 is quite special for Call of Duty. In my opinion, Activision owes it to everyone who enjoyed Black Ops 2 to pay homage to the game next year.

Why it matters: Call of Duty has been away from futuristic settings for nearly six years. With a major milestone and anniversary coming up next year, the publisher could finally return to a different era.

Black Ops 2 Fundamentally Changed Call of Duty In Multiple Ways

2025 Is Black Ops 2 Year

Black Ops 2 was released back in 2012, featuring a storyline consisting of two parts, one with the setting of the first Cold War from 1986 to 1989, while the other was based on a fictional war in 2025.

Since Treyarch was the first to make the jump to a futuristic setting, Black Ops 2 is the most fondly remembered for this aspect. Both Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3 pushed the franchise further in the future, but their setting is not as iconic.

The former followed events in 2054, while the latter took the franchise all the way into 2065. Yet, Black Ops 2’s depiction of 2025 is much more widely known, partly due to how popular the game was.

Perhaps Treyarch using names like Nuketown 2025 for iconic maps was another reason for 2025 being tied to Call of Duty. As a futuristic game, Black Ops 2 featured aspects of modern warfare, such as drones, robots, hacking, and more.

However, unlike its follow-ups, the game offered a grounded take on the future. It struck a balance that appealed to all fans. Therefore, the year 2025 is now associated with Black Ops 2 for millions of gamers, and Activision should not let this opportunity go to waste.

What To Expect

If Activision’s recent move to reuse content in Modern Warfare 3 was any indication, the gaming giant seems keen on catering to nostalgia.

According to reports, 2025’s game will be a direct Black Ops 2 sequel. Set five years in the future, the game should feature familiar faces from the campaign and themes across the multiplayer.

The game is expected to bring back pick-10 classes, a classic approach to zombies, and more. Various iconic maps are also expected to return. However, Activision has already remastered many maps from Black Ops 2 across multiple games.

With Black Ops 2 being arguably the most influential modern Call of Duty game, Activision could reignite a passion for the franchise in 2025.

It is no secret that fans have longed for a Black Ops 2 remaster for many years, but the publisher could present something even better soon. If last year’s resurgence was any indication, fans are still more than willing to return to this era of Call of Duty.

In 2012, this release made $500 million within 24 hours. For reference, a game like GTA 5 made $800 million on its first day, highlighting just how big Black Ops 2 was as an entertainment product.

Therefore, the publisher needs to recognize its importance and give it the treatment fans have wanted for years.
