Uncharted 4: A Cultural Phenomenon In Gaming

Expert Verified By

Uncharted 4 is a masterpiece for many reasons, and is claimed to be the best Uncharted game by many.

Story Highlight
  • Uncharted 4 is one of the best action/adventure games due to the densely packed action sequences and smooth parkour mechanics.
  • The story is also cinematic and isn’t profoundly based on its prequels, meaning you can pick and play the game without knowing much about the prequels.
  • The ending is incredibly written, perfectly concluding Nate’s journey.

Uncharted is one of those franchises that highly represents PlayStation. It’s one of the most successful games on PlayStation and has its reasons for it. When the franchise’s first game was launched, gamers didn’t take it seriously. Many thought the game was just a ripped-off Tomb Raider game, but that wasn’t the case.

Uncharted proved to be one of the best and most memorable action/adventure games and surpassed the success of Tomb Raiders with its sequels. It’s hard to say which Uncharted game is the best of the franchise, but Uncharted 4 is undoubtedly a nominee for that title.

Released in 2016, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was one of the most awaited games of the year. Fans were already hyped for the franchise’s fourth installment, but their patience for the release was tested more when it was announced that it would be the last main-story Uncharted game.

When the game finally got released, it reminded everyone why Naughty Dog is one of the best video game developers, especially in linear story games.

As in every other Uncharted opening, Nathan Drake, the protagonist, is escaping from trouble. This time, he is on a speed boat with his brother Sam, trying to reach an island while escaping a private/hired army.

Just as the cutscene ends, we get straight to the fast-paced action Uncharted is known for, as we are handed a gun and must defend ourselves and the boat. Shots are being fired everywhere; we have to keep our guard and keep heading toward the island. This opening scene was one hell of a first impression and reminded me of the opening scenes of the prequels.

The smooth transitions between the cutscenes and the action-packed gameplay make you feel like you are playing an action movie. These transitions to the thrilling, unpredictable scenes make Uncharted stand out from other action games. Uncharted 4 also does a great job at that, which is one of the reasons why fans still revisit it.

With many twists, turns, and near-death incidents, the game ends with Nate finding the treasure but failing to claim it because of Rafe, the game’s main villain, who dies in the chaos while fighting Nate. The treasure gets buried in a cave, and the whole place explodes. No one gets the treasure, and Nate’s final adventure comes to an end.

In the game’s epilogue, we see Nate in his 50s, living with Elena and his teenage daughter on a beach. We get to play as Nate’s daughter. In the ending sequence, we find Nate’s closet and journal, where all of his past achievements are buried, and in the final shot, the camera moves to some pictures from Nate’s past. The main theme song starts playing, and the credits start rolling.

This was the perfect ending to Nate’s journey. It’s also one of the reasons why this game is loved so much. Naughty Dog did a great job developing Nate’s character in the previous game, and with this part’s ending, they made him even more memorable.

Moving on to the gameplay elements, we get some fantastic locations perfect for adventurers like Nathan, action-packed gun fights, and exciting puzzles. One of the worth mentioning locations is Scotland, where we get the brown-orange autumn vibe and spectacular mountain climbing sequences.

We also get a stealth chapter in Italy where we must break into an auction, but the stealth doesn’t last long. And how can one forget Madagascar, where the best chase scene happens.

The game’s main theme song also played a part in making it stand out among its prequels. It gives a last-ride vibe, perfect for Nate’s story, and a great way to say goodbye to one of the most loved characters in gaming history. It is yet another reason why Uncharted 4 is exceptional.

These are just the highlights. Uncharted 4 is full of high-paced action and high-flying parkour at every point. When all of this is combined with realistic graphics and physics, you feel like you are playing a movie. This is why fans keep returning to this masterpiece.
