Look closely around you and spot how IoT has made our lives efficient. It is present in our routine, from grocery shopping to hospital checkups. The adoption of IoT offers many benefits.

IoT has a critical role in healthcare systems. Devices can be connected to the internet to monitor patients’ health status. An IoT device can detect when a patient needs urgent attention so prompt responses can be taken. During COVID-19, it was used mainly to monitor and regulate patients’ conditions with minimal human interaction (Fahrni et al., 2020).

It has also aided in the Industrial Revolution 4.0. Smart factories rely on IoT to monitor and identify environmental challenges. Consequently, it can help tackle factory waste management, efficient energy use, enhance product quality, boost manufacturing, and improve ROI (Ihekoronye et al., 2021). Similarly, corporate sectors can also use IoT to keep track of their monthly progress, financial data, and employee performance.

Moreover,  classrooms can have interactive whiteboards, AI integrations, and a sensor-based student attendance system, leading to a more interactive learning experience.

Institutes can have smart libraries that can make navigating books easier while suggesting relevant books for a particular topic (Dake & Bada, 2023). Therefore, incorporating IoT into education can produce a more curious generation of well-equipped learners.

The relevant authorities can install CCTV cameras and sensors at the governmental level for a more efficient traffic control system. Authorities can know when a driver has broken the traffic rules and fine them accordingly.

The concept of smart cities is already on the rise, with prominent countries like the United Arab Emirates already utilizing the IoT potential. According to Smart City Index 2021, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are ranked as the smartest cities in the Middle East.

A common example of IoT is wearable tech, such as smartwatches. With the help of IoT sensors, they can detect your body temperature, pulse rate, physical activities, and more.  Smart homes rely on IoT tech to regulate the internal temperature and electrical devices.

GPS is an excellent IoT innovation that almost everyone needs these days. Organizations and institutes use biometric sensors to confirm an individual’s identity, thus maintaining security. 

Current Analysis And Future Predictions

With around 16.3 billion IoT connections worldwide, ABI Research estimates the revenue of IoT data and analytics services will be US$76.4 billion in 2024.

According to Statista’s analysis, the total number of IoT devices is expected to double from 15.1 billion in 2020 to 29 billion in 2030. 

Big companies are already investing in IoT expansion. For example, Microsoft revealed Azure IoT, a Micosoft-managed collection of cloud services for businesses. Similarly, Google’s Internet of Things Solutions comprises Google Assistant Smart Home, NEST Device Access, and Edge TPU.

While IoT is indeed a mindblowing concept reshaping the world as we know it, it is essential not to ignore the privacy risks of large-scale IoT adoption. Keeping the stats in mind, I believe dependence on IoT will greatly benefit humans. It is clear that IoT has the potential to make our lives efficient by helping us save time, resources, and manual labour.

However, it will come at the risk of data breaches and personal information and identity exposure. Therefore, tackling such concerns is crucial to ethically utilizing the perks of IoT.
