RGB lighting in gaming peripherals has always looked great. Let’s admit it: The dazzling lights, the endless customization options, and the aesthetic appeal are hard to resist. However, the more I have used these wireless RGB peripherals, the more I realize that chasing RGB in these devices is often more trouble than it’s worth.

The Hype vs. The Reality

When it comes to RGB, the hype is undeniable. Manufacturers often brag about vibrant colors and dynamic lighting effects as must-have features for gamers or tech lovers. That’s why it’s quite easy to get carried away in the excitement of imagining your workspace illuminated by a spectrum of colors; however, I can assure you the reality is far less glamorous.

RGB can introduce several issues that undermine the overall experience in wireless peripherals. One of the major concerns is that the battery takes a significant dip with integrating RGB in wireless peripherals.

Significant Loss Of Battery Life

One of the most significant drawbacks of RGB in wireless peripherals is its impact on battery life. Wireless devices already have the challenge of balancing performance and power consumption, and adding RGB lighting to the mix only makes matters worse.

The LEDs used in RGB lighting consume power, and the more extensive the lighting effects, the more power is consumed. This means more frequent charging or battery replacements, which, to be fair, no one likes. I’ve personally experienced this with an RGB wireless mouse Corsair M75. When I tested this mouse, I said this in my review: 

The Corsair M75 Wireless Lightweight RGB provides a comprehensive gaming experience, earning high marks for its ambidextrous design, precise performance, and extensive customization options.

Despite the amazing gaming experience with my Corsair M75, I needed to recharge it more frequently while using it with RGB turned on. The battery life was reduced significantly with the usage of RGB.

The convenience of a wireless device quickly vanished as I had to plug it in every few days later for charging. For peripherals meant to offer freedom and flexibility, this constant plugging into a power source feels extremely hectic.

Practicality and Purpose

Let’s face it: while RGB lighting looks cool, it doesn’t add any functional value to wireless peripherals. The primary purpose of these devices is to enhance productivity, provide seamless user experiences, and support us in our work or play. RGB lighting, while visually appealing, doesn’t contribute to these core objectives.

Think about the times you’ve been indulged in a game or focused on a project. Did the color of your mouse or keyboard make a difference in your performance? For me, the answer is a clear no. The aesthetics may look nice, but ultimately, what truly matters is the functionality and reliability of the device.

Make The Right Choices!

So, the question is, what should you consider when choosing wireless peripherals? I would say focus on the essentials: battery life, connectivity, performance, and comfort. Look for devices with powerful battery management features and reliable wireless technology (such as Bluetooth).

From my personal experience, I’ve found that non-RGB options often outperform their RGB counterparts in these critical areas. A wireless mouse with a long-lasting battery, a keyboard with consistent and responsive keystrokes, and a headset with clear audio have proven to be far more beneficial to me than their counterpart RGB-integrated peripherals.

Take, for instance, the Corsair HS80, a wireless headset with RGB, which I tested out and posted a review on as well. In my review, I recommended it as a perfect fit for dedicated gamers, but then again, battery life reduces from 65 hours without RGB to only 24 hours with RGB.

Function Over Flash

When choosing technology, it’s important to prioritize function over flashy features. Focus on battery life, performance, and durability for a consistent and practical experience without the distractions of RGB lighting.

Therefore, the next time you are looking for wireless peripherals, give some thought to what really matters. Your technology setup will benefit greatly if you discover that less is more.
