Average FPS

In our testing, we saw an average difference in framerate of about 3.4%, with the 5800X3D pulling through in Microsoft Flight Sim with a big lead. Most games did not have a huge difference in framerate between the two chips and could be enjoyed just as well on either.

1% Lows

The minimum framerates had quite a bit of difference between these chips, with the 9700X being around 9% faster on average than the 5800X3D. Still, the difference was not huge, though definitely more perceivable than the averages.

The gaming felt pretty similar, going from game to game and chip to chip, with the 5800X3D holding up quite excellently in our testing.

The Ryzen 7 9700X is around 21% more expensive than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, but bear in mind these prices have been extrapolated from sources that sell both chips new, and you can get quite a bit cheaper if you look of it on the used market.

What We Recommend

Ryzen 7 9700X: This processor slightly outperformed its rival in our Ryzen 7 9700X vs Ryzen 7 5800X3D tests but costs about $70 more. With only minor improvements, it’s harder to recommend than the 5800X3D.

Ryzen 7 5800X3D: The tried-and-tested Ryzen 7 5800X3D performed very well in our benchmarks, getting close to the performance of the 9700X and even beating it in one game. The power consumption and temperatures were also very manageable, making this chip easily recommended.

Having discussed both these chips, we have to mention that this comparison is not entirely apples to apples. The Ryzen 9000X3D chips are slated to be released soon, so sit tight for when that comparison drops.
