Valve Refunding GTA 5 After Anti-Cheat Broke Game On Steam Deck

Good Move From Valve!

GTA 5, released in 2013, is still one of Rockstar’s best-selling games. Over 200 million units of the title have been sold, making it one of the best-selling titles of all time. However, with Rockstar’s new anti-cheat update, GTA Online is no longer compatible with Steam Deck.

It’s been just a few days since the new anti-cheat system, known as BattlEye, was implemented on the kernel level. The system was implemented to avoid cheaters, who were becoming more of a problem each day.

However, it made the game’s online mode incompatible with Linux and the Steam Deck platform.

Why it matters: The Steam Deck is an incredibly popular handheld and many people prefer it for older titles like GTA 5.

Rockstar claimed the Steam Deck does not support BattlEye system.

While that is not the case, as the system has already been implemented in other games like DayZ, Arma, Planetside, and some others, the statement makes it clear that the problem arose due to Rockstar’s kernel-level implementation.

Fortunately, Valve has decided to refund GTA 5 for Linux and Steam Deck players. Users who bought the game on Linux or Steam Deck can now do so, and they will receive money in their wallets in 24 or 48 hours.

Those who don’t want to refund their games can settle for single-player mode, which works very well. Rockstar has not done anything about it yet, but Valve has removed GTA 5 from the verified section of its handheld.
