Microsoft Edge and other internet browsers.

Microsoft’s internet browser has always had a negative perception over the years. From the days of the Internet Explorer, it was deemed the slowest browser. It became the browser that was often used to download a different browser upon a fresh Windows install. However, back in 2015, Microsoft tried to reinvent the Internet Explorer. With a new name and a more modern look, Microsoft Edge was created. While the initial reception was lukewarm, it seems like the browser has slowly been creeping up the ranks.

According to figures from StatCounter for the month of March, Edge is now the second most popular browser right behind Google Chrome.

As the image shows, Google Chrome is by far the most popular browser. This is not surprising as Chrome has kept this nearly 70% share for years. Edge on the other hand, has now overtaken the likes of Safari and Firefox. Edge now has a 9.65% share in the desktop browser space as shown by the image. It is also worth noting that Safari is limited to Apple’s ecosystem and the numbers in the chart only take desktop computers into account. Nonetheless, overtaking popular browsers like Firefox and Opera is a great accomplishment for Microsoft Edge.

For now, it is hard to point to the causes of Edge’s lead over the other browsers. For years Edge has struggled to find its place among the giants despite many prior efforts. One could simply point to Microsoft making it extremely hard to switch default browsers on Windows 11 until recently. On the other hand, it can be argued that the browser is in a much better place than it used to be years a go.

While Edge has risen to the second spot, it is still nowhere near the gigantic Chrome in terms of market share. Chrome has dominated the browser space for several years and it sits comfortably in first place. However, with enough work and steady progress, Microsoft Edge could just be a worthy competitor to Google’s browser at some point in the near future.
