With the launch of the newest iteration of Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 4000 series just around the corner, the specifications of the newer cards have started pouring in, especially the  GeForce RTX 4070. The GeForce RTX 3070 is widely considered the best value card of the ‘Ampere’ based architecture due to its excellent performance and MSRP. However, the RTX 4070 is set to take things to a new level.

The GeForce RTX 3070 was based on the 8nm architecture from Samsung. However, in the GeForce RTX 4070, this has been upgraded to TSMC 5nm process node. The architecture is also different as this time it will be called ‘Lovelace’ based on a different AD103 GPU Core. Foreign media, MyDrivers, has provided the alleged leaked specifications of the GeForce RTX 4070:

Compared to the previous generation, GeForce RTX 3070 had 5,888 CUDA cores compared to RTX 4070’s 9,728. The GeForce RTX 4070 also has more tensor cores compared to 184 on its predecessor. Moreover, the TDP on the RTX 3070 maxed out at 220W, however that of the RTX 4070 will peak at 300W so you will need a better power supply. But if you already had a PSU with high wattage and a good 80+ rating then it will work just fine. Another significant difference is the VRAM; the VRAM has been upgraded to 16GB in the GeForce RTX 4070, which has never been seen in the xx70 series before.

But, of course, the main differentiating factor between RTX 4070 and 3070 will be the performance difference. If the claims are true, the GeForce RTX 4070 is said to perform an average of 10% better than the high-end GeForce RTX 3090 from the Ampere architecture. Obviously, the performance difference between the RTX 3090 and RTX 4070 is just theoretical because, at the moment, we don’t have much info on the GeForce RTX 4070. The exact numbers will be seen when the benchmarks start pouring in at the launch time.

Where things get interesting is in the pricing. Despite all the performance boost, the GeForce RTX 4070 is expected to retain the price tag of MSRP of $499, the same as its predecessor. But, the tricky part here is that TSMC’s chips were increased in price, and the silicon shortage is a whole new story, although availability is better now, but still far from over. Therefore, it remains to be seen if the speculations about the MSRP are true and if Nvidia will launch the GeForce RTX 4070 for $499.
