We were quite sure till now that the 12VHPWR connector problem was only limited to the AIB partner’s graphics cards. But it seems the problem has now appeared on the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition model, as shared by a user on the Reddit platform

Reddit user shared the picture of his damaged 12VHPWR connector on the Founders Edition model, proving that even the Founders Edition graphics cards from Nvidia are not immune to this issue.

So if the Founders Edition of RTX 4090 models are also affected by the faulty 12VHPWR connector, then it seems like AIB partners were never responsible for the issue with higher power limits.

Nvidia has also confirmed using two manufacturers for the 12VHPWR connector, NTK, and Astron, and as per testing done by Igor’s lab, the 12VHPWR connector from NTK is more durable. So maybe Reddit user GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition ended up with a 12VHPWR connector manufactured by Astron, or perhaps the cable was not correctly inserted, as Corsair PSU expert JonnyGuru also raised this issue.

The 12VHPWR connector issue is spread wider now, and Nvidia being silent on the matter does not help; the green camp is still investigating the matter.

PCI-SIG is also revising the 12VHPWR connector, and we should have the results by 22nd December 2022. Maybe it was too early to go with a properly untested 12VHPWR connector, putting Nvidia in a bad spot, even though the GeForce RTX 4090 is an excellent option for anyone looking to experience a high refresh rate for 4k gaming.
