Xbox has been the center of attention lately. The brand looks better than ever, and Sony’s recent price hike has only helped the Xbox brand. Similarly, Microsoft has also done a phenomenal job with backward compatibility support.
Last year, it was announced that Microsoft would not be releasing any more backward-compatible games for the Xbox consoles. This included Xbox and Xbox 360 titles. However, it seems like this might not be the case anymore. A new rumor suggests Xbox is gearing for one final batch of backward-compatible titles.
This information comes from the Xbox Era podcast. In the most recent episode, Nick stated that Activision games with licensing issues could be made backward compatible once Activision Blizzard’s acquisition is completed.
Activision has worked on various games over the years. While the publishers have been limited to Call of Duty lately, this was not always the case. Fans of the publisher’s titles will undoubtedly be pleased with this information. Nick said,
“We may get one last little group of backwards compatible games, once ABK goes through. There will be some games that were tied up in licensing messes, that now may no longer be tied up in licensing messes.”
Nick also stated that Marvel and Transformers games are not likely to be included. This means that the older Spider-Man games and other superhero games will unfortunately not be coming back. The licensing issues for those games are more complicated than expected.
Moreover, some older Activision games were also released on PC recently. Heretic and Quake 4 were recently released on the Microsoft Windows store. Quake 4 was also released on Game Pass for PC. This could be a hint of things to come in the future.
Nick was told about two such games from Activision. However, he did not mention the games. He also confirmed that the complete list was not limited to the games that his source said. As with any rumor, this information should be taken with a grain of salt.
Perhaps Activision could bring back games like Blur and the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise. The latter also received a remaster long ago, but the original games are still not backward compatible for Xbox. Other titles like Wolfenstein 2009 would not be far-fetched either.
This sounds like great news for fans of backward compatibility. The push for backward compatibility has been among the most well-received moves from Microsoft. It seems like the gaming giant is not done with backward compatibility just yet, and Activision will have a considerable part to play in this scenario.
