- AMD has gone open source with FSR 3 Frame Generation.
- Following its source code being made publicly available, a mod makes Frame Generation usable in all games that support DLSS 3.
- This means that GeForce RTX 20 and 30 GPUs can also benefit from the technology without official support from AMD.
AMD FSR 3 was first shown off in games like Forspoken. Like Nvidia’s Frame Generation, this technology improves performance to help assist with intense workloads that can tank performance.
AMD recently went open source with Frame Generation, uploading the entire source code for the public to see. This also spawned mods for The Last of Us Part 1, and another mod makes it possible to use AMD’s Frame Generation in games that support DLSS 3.
Why it matters: Such mods could expand this technology beyond the RTX 4000 graphics cards, pushing forward the company’s goal of favoring an open-source approach.
The latest mod comes from Nukem9. testing FSR 3 in graphics cards other than the GeForce RTX 4000 series. It is clear that AMD’s Frame Generation provides an impressive boost.
Despite stability issues and problems due to the early nature of this mod, it has already shown a lot of potential. In the future, a more complete version of the mod could breathe new life into the GeForce RTX 20 and 30 series graphics cards.
The video above shows this mod in action. Cyberpunk 2077 shoots up to over 70FPS when using Fram Generation on the GeForce RTX 3080, making it much better than the vanilla performance.
Still, as always, Frame Generation is not recommended when a game runs below 60FPS at the baseline, so this is something to consider for future use.
The modding community has always been quick to catch on to these technologies. While FSR 3 has been painfully slow to grow in terms of official support, the modders could ensure this technology spreads rapidly in the coming months.
Most recently, AMD officially introduced Frame Generation to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, where FSR 3 really shines because of the impressive visuals of the game when all settings are turned up.
