PS5 Pro: AMD Teases AI-Powered Upscaling For 2024

PlayStation's Rival To DLSS!

Story Highlights
  • According to CTO Mark Papermaster, AMD will use AI for its gaming devices in 2024.
  • This could be a subtle hint at the upscaling tech in the PS5 Pro.
  • AMD might also be able to use this partnership to offer its own AI-based upscaling for Radeon hardware later.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution was released two years after Nvidia DLSS in the year 2021. Due to its open-source, cross-vendor, and cross-platform support, the initial generation of FSR was based on the spatial upscaling technique known as FSR 1.

AMD’s usage of an upscaling technology that does not require dedicated hardware allowed many to benefit from straightforward upscaling. It also launched an improved temporal upscaling method known as FSR 2 later.

AMD’s CTO, Mark Papermaster, recently suggested that the company might be looking at utilizing AI algorithms for upscaling as well. However, this may be a hint at the PS5 Pro, considering recent recent rumors.

Why it matters: AMD has already launched a new version of FSR recently, making it unlikely for a dedicated revision of the upscaling using artificial intelligence.

According to Mark Papermaster, 2024 will be a huge year for AMD.

We are enabling our gaming devices to upscale using AI.

While this remark could mean a revamped version of FSR is on the way, recent rumors mean that the CTO is likely referring to the PS5 Pro. This console was already rumored to introduce a DLSS-like upscaling solution.

The CTO using the term ‘gaming devices’ provides further evidence that he referred to the upcoming console. Therefore, Sony and AMD are expected to share R&D efforts, reaching an AI-based solution to rival Nvidia.

However, this collaboration could result in AMD benefiting from AI-upscaling for future graphics cards.

The PS5 Pro is expected to launch in Q4 of this year. While the hardware itself is expected to be a modest upgrade, Sony’s efforts in AI-upscaling could be game-changing for console gaming.

This could also be beneficial for PC gamers. With Nvidia currently being the leading company with AI implementations in gaming, AMD could use this partnership to catch up and offer its own solutions after 2024.
