AMD recently released the AMD Radeon Pro W7800 GPU for workstations which mimics the performance of the yet-to-be-announced AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT. This graphic card works particularly well for simulating some of the hardware-level specifications anticipated from this mid-to-high-end GPU for the gaming segment.
The Radeon PRO W7800 offers 4,480 Stream Processors with Navi 31 GPU under the AMD RDNA 3 architecture. This Pro model uses 32GB of GDDR6 memory through a 256-bit interface. Although such specs could’ve easily been covered by Navi 32, AMD opted for a higher-end RDNA3 model.
This graphics card is ideal for understanding what we can expect from the Radeon RX 7800 XT. In essence, both share the exact specifications at the chipset level. The most significant difference is that it will offer 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. In this way, it is ideal to have a simulation of what we could expect from the new AMD GPU.
Igor’s Lab shared benchmarks showing that the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT is expected to be just 4% faster, on average, than the Radeon RX 6800 XT at Full HD resolution. While the RX 6800 offers an average of 100 FPS at 1080p, simulating the performance of the RX 7800 XT would provide an extra 2.1% performance (+2.1 FPS).
If a calculation is made based on the frequencies it could reach, the average performance improvement is up to 4.1% higher.
To cut a long tale short, the simulated RX 7800 XT is 4% (1080p), 8% (1440p), and 12.5% (2160p) faster than the 6800 XT, which is not much of an upgrade. But one must keep in mind that this is just a simulation.
Therefore, the outcomes might not represent the graphics cards, whose specs are still rumors. Because the AMD Radeon PRO series cards were not created to handle heavy gaming workloads, so even after increasing clocks and TBP, the BIOS may still be causing inferior performance.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT is faster than the Radeon RX 6800 XT while consuming less power. Now, if it’s much more expensive, it won’t be worth your purchase over a GPU released in October 2020 over one that hasn’t hit the market yet.
