Assassin’s Creed Origins took the franchise in a new direction in 2017. The game came with a massive open world, an overhauled combat system, and various RPG mechanics. Assassin’s Creed Red will continue this legacy in the coming years.
However, the franchise is taking a break from this approach, returning to the classic formula with Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Following the upcoming title, the series will head to the much-requested Japanese setting and bring back RPG mechanics.
However, a known insider and ResetEra forum member, John Harker, suggests the game set in Japan would mark the end of the RPG formula.
Why it matters: Assassin’s Creed has always been known to change gameplay styles and bring massive changes throughout its lifespan. However, the last three games have followed a similar approach, but this could change after the franchise visits Japan.
The leaker recently said:
“Red’ll be the last of the Origins formula.”
Since Assassin’s Creed Origins is credited as the game that pushed the series into the RPG genre, fans might not see another RPG after Assassin’s Creed Red.
Previously, Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Hexe would not follow the RPG formula. Recently, a developer also claimed it would leave a lasting mark on the popular franchise from Ubisoft.
As such, this entry may introduce a new gameplay style, inspiring future titles to iterate and improve upon its foundations. On the other hand, Ubisoft could experiment with various styles in the coming years.
The RPG formula worked well for Assassin’s Creed and helped it branch out after a few lukewarm entries. However, fans have criticized the recent games for being bloated and too big in scope. As such, a new direction will likely help address these concerns.
The leaker has previously proven to be a reliable source of Assassin’s Creed information, but it would be best to take the leak with a grain of salt.
Nonetheless, Ubisoft appears to be preparing for a grand finale to the RPG genre. The developer recently claimed that Assassin’s Creed Red would be the biggest blockbuster of 2024.
