Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Disc Requires Internet For Installation

Doesn't Work Without Internet On First Boot!

Story Highlights
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released on 7 December.
  • A few users have obtained early physical copies, but the game does not work for them.
  • It seems a mandatory patch or internet connection is required for physical owners.

Ubisoft is looking to end 2023 on a great note. Following a slew of impressive single-player titles this year, Massive Entertainment is set to release Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on 7 December.

This game is primarily a single-player adventure but also allows players to join their friends for optional co-op. However, it appears the game has placed an artificial internet connection limitation for physical disc owners.

According to reports, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora requires an active internet connection for installation.

Why it matters: This could lead to outrage since physical disc owners are generally not fond of such limitations as it harms preservation in the long term.

The following was reported by Reddit user Interesting-Squash81. After receiving an early PS5 physical copy of the game, the user was unable to proceed beyond the initial main menu.

Despite attempts to change the date and time of the console, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora did not work for the Redditor. While the game is not an always-online title, it seems Ubisoft has restricted players without the day-one patch.

Effectively, this means that physical copies of the game will not work without an internet connection to download the patch. This is further clarified by the game’s box art, which states an internet connection is needed to install the game.

Not too long ago, games like Redfall drew flack for requiring a persistent internet connection, and the same may happen with Massive Entertainment’s title, even though these are different scenarios.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Looking ahead, in a scenario where Ubisoft shuts down the servers for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, game discs might cease to function for new consoles. Still, the implementation is quite confusing, and it remains to be seen if the studio will acknowledge this problem.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has received quite a few positive previews so far. With various positive qualities, it would be a shame to see the game criticized for such a small oversight, so we hope to see Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment removing this limitation in the future.
