It’s no surprise that the gaming industry is rife with innovation in every genre. However, some wildcards exist that defy the common norms when it comes to expected success and popularity. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one such game, and now a new report confirms just how much of a moneymaker the RPG has become amid many concerns and criticisms in its path.

After massive losses in 2022, Baldur’s Gate 3 blossomed hard to make Larian almost a $260 million profit in revenue last year. The massive number boosted the revenue by nearly twenty times compared to the hard months of 2022.

Why it matters: Baldur’s Gate 3 making such a huge profit in a year suggests that the RPG was more successful than the critics or gamers thought. This feat may convince AAA developers to create games that players actually love.

Baldur's Gate 3
The game has won multiple awards in many domains ever since its eventful launch.

As originally reported by the Irish Independent, Larian published a $259 million pre-tax revenue profit last year. The entire revenue was $446 million, which was apparently earned by 15 million copies that were rolled over in 2023. However, many other sources have painted an even bigger sales number over the months.

In contrast, Larian earned only $24 million in revenue and had an operating loss of $223,000. In other words, Baldur’s Gate 3 needed to be extremely successful just for the studio to break even—which it did eventually.

Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios is already working on multiple new unannounced projects behind the scenes.

This year is also said to be highly profitable for Larian Studios, with Baldur’s Gate 3 seeing a steady bump in sales and concurrent players—especially after the official mod support dropped. Now, the devs are working on two new projects, which won’t launch anytime soon.
