ASROCK X470 Taichi

Best High-End X470 Motherboard

ASROCK AMD X470 Taichi
ASRock X470 TAICHI

Specifications: CHIPSET: AMD X470 Chipset | MEMORY: 4 x DIMM, 128GB MAX (DDR4) DISPLAY OUTPUTS: HDMI, Display Port | REAR USB PORTS: 6 x USB 3.1 Gen1, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A |  Network:Intel I211-AT LAN controller, Intel® 802.11ac WiFi Module | Storage: 2x M.2, 8x SATA III

Pros

  • Great design
  • Eight SATA ports
  • Excellent VRMs

Cons

  • Slightly Expensive
  • Underwhelming Gaming Performance

Design & Build Quality: Right off the bat, the motherboard’s unique looks stand out. It comes with a matte black and grey PCB with a few RGB strips along the left side of the board. This blend of black and grey looks amazing, and I found the build quality to be premium, which was expected at this price point.

Performance: The ASROCK X470 Taichi features an impressive 16-phase design VRM design in a 12+4 configuration. Moreover, we get large heatsinks for the M.2 and for the chipset itself. This meant my test bench SSD stayed under 60°C while under stress, and I managed to stably overclock the Ryzen 7 5800X, too.

Features & Connectivity: We get plenty of good connectivity with the board, including eight SATA ports and two M.2 slots. Also, there are four PCIe slots, six USB 3.0 ports, and a single USB 3.1 Type-C. It also features Wireless LAN, but I was disappointed that there is just one HDMI port for display.

What makes the ASROCK X470 Taichi the best high-end X470 motherboard are its excellent VRMs and cooling system, but it offers a lot more: unique aesthetics, plenty of I/O, and, let’s not forget, RGB!

Buy It If

✅You prioritize overclocking: The ASROCK X470 Taichi has a robust 16-phase VRM setup which provided more than enough for overclocking in my review.

✅Storage versatility matters: With two M.2 slots and eight SATA ports, the motherboard offers ample storage options for most users.

✅You want plenty of I/O: The motherboard features a comprehensive array of rear I/O ports.

Don’t Buy It If

❌You seek top-tier gaming performance: Since the ASROCK X470 Taichi is not a gaming motherboard, gaming performance was underwhelming for me.

❌You seek faster connectivity: The Wi-Fi speed is limited to 433Mbps and there is also no 10 Gigabyte LAN port which should have been there at this premium price.

What Makes It The Best High-End X470 Motherboard?

Other than its slightly underwhelming gaming performance, the ASROCK X470 Taichi is a fantastic pick if you are planning on upgrading to the X470 chipset. It is packed with all the features you need to power a high-end processor. Its unique design, coupled with its solid performance and build quality made it my choice for the Best High-End X470 Motherboard.

Specifications: CHIPSET: AMD X470 Chipset | MEMORY: 4 x DIMM, 128GB MAX (DDR4) DISPLAY OUTPUTS: HDMI, Display Port | REAR USB PORTS: 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2, 4 x USB 3.1 Gen 1, 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 |  Network: 1x Intel® I211-AT Gigabit LAN controller | Storage: 2 x M.2, 6x SATA III

Pros

  • Excellent price-to-performance ratio
  • Great Overclocking Capabilities
  • Pre-Installed Rear I/O backplate

Cons

  • No Wifi

Design & Build Quality: One look at it and you know this is a gaming motherboard. It is solidly built and features an all-black PCB with a heatsink with reflective text on top of it, which ASUS refers to as a “Cyber Outlook.” design. There is a single RGB strip and an RGB logo on top of the rear I/O.

Performance: For the VRMs, ASUS has equipped the ROG Strix X470-F Gaming with a 6+4 phase VRM setup. Its temperatures were on the higher side during my testing, but it proved adequate for overclocking. Also, there is overcurrent protection for the DRAM modules and a massive M.2 heatsink which also cover the PCH.

Features & Connectivity: It comes with four RAM slots supporting up to DDR4 3600 MHz. Meanwhile, its pre-installed I/O bracket features a wide variety of ports, and I was pleasantly surprised to see both an HDMI and a Display port. We get six SATA ports and two M.2 slots for storage, and six PCIe slots, too.

WARNING: One thing to keep in mind is that the second M.2 is a PCIe 3.0 x2 slot, slightly limiting its performance.

Buy It If

✅You prioritize feature-packed motherboards: The ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming offers a range of features including dual M.2 slots and a decent selection of USB ports.

Pros

  • Attractive White Design
  • Excellent Value

Cons

  • Lack of USB 3.1 ports
  • No WIFI

Design & Build Quality: The ASUS PRIME X470-Pro showcases a unique and clean black-and-white design. RGB lighting can be found on the rear I/O cover and on top of the chipset heatsink. Meanwhile, I love the metallic finish on the metallic heatsinks with diagonal stripes on top, as they give off a premium look.

Performance: On a more important note, the motherboard comes with an impressive 8+2 VRM setup. The various heatsinks not only look great but provide excellent cooling, too. Not only did it stably run the Ryzen 9 5900X on boost frequency, but I even managed to overclock the RAM in my testing.

Moving on, we have three full-sized PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, the first two of which are reinforced with steel; a nice touch. There is support for both Nvidia SLI and AMD 3-way CrossFireX. Lastly, the I/O USB connectivity didn’t impress me.

PRO TIP: If you’re not satisfied with the number of USB 3.1 ports, consider investing in a USB hub.

Buy It If

✅ You want a white-themed build: Its white heatsinks and the black PCB make it a perfect addition for your next white-themed build.

✅ You seek affordability in mid-range: It offers impressive specifications at a reasonable price, making it an excellent choice for mid-range builds.

Don’t Buy It If

❌ You require onboard buttons: The lack of onboard buttons for troubleshooting or overclocking can be a problem for enthusiasts wanting to overclock their processors.

❌ You need more USB 3.1 ports: While it has a decent selection of USB ports, more USB 3.1 ports would have been appreciated.

What Makes It The Best White X470 Motherboard?

The ASUS PRIME X470-Pro is a mid-range board that benefits from all the features of the X470 chipset at a considerably lower price. On top of that, it also features a striking white design which is bound to look good when paired with similar themed components. Taking all that into account, I have crowned the ASUS PRIME X470-Pro as the Best White X470 Motherboard.

Pros

  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Exceptional build quality
  • Excellent selection of rear I/O ports.

Cons

  • Extremely Expensive

Aesthetics & Build Quality: The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero does not go out of its way to look visually appealing; however, its all-black PCB, coupled with the silver finish on the heatsinks, gives the entire motherboard an aggressive and premium look that made my test build look amazing. It also shows an extremely sturdy build.

Performance: Coming in with a 12-phase VRM setup, the Crosshair VII Hero assigns 10 phases for the CPU voltage and 2 phases to the SOC voltage, which proved more than adequate for overclocking the Ryzen 9 5950X in my testing. Also, there are color-coded debug LEDs present to help you with the troubleshooting process.

Features & Connectivity: For the connectivity, it comes with two full-sized PCIe 3.0 x 16 slots, two M.2 slots, and six SATA ports. ASUS has used its Supreme FX S1220 CODEC Audio solution which which showed good audio quality in my testing. Moreover, there are a staggering eight USB 3.1 Gen1 ports, among others.

PRO TIP: Using the first M.2 slot will limit the first PCIe slot to x8 speeds, which is why using the second M.2 slot at the bottom is recommended.

Buy It If

Pros

  • Dual LAN Ports
  • Great Value

Cons

  • No WIFI
  • Black And Red Design might not be for everyone

Design & Build Quality: The MSI X470 Gaming Plus sports a combination of gray, black, and muted red tones, which is a typical MSI color theme. However, they have decided to go for a slightly duller tone, which gives it a rather sleek appearance. Moreover, the build quality is decent.

Performance: While MSI refers to the VRM design as an 11-phase design, in reality, it comes with a 4+2 setup in an eight-phase configuration. Even with with this design, its performance is on par with most mid-range X470 boards. It handled the Ryzen 9 3900x at 4.2GHz in my testing, which is great for the price.

Features & Connectivity: MSI has equipped the X470 Gaming Plus with a full-sized PCIe 3.0 x 16 slot. We are also provided with four slots in total, supporting speeds up to 3466 MHz. Crossfire is supported but Nvidia SLI is not. Two M.2 slots are available but with no separate heatsinks for them. Lastly, the Rear I/O is quite decent.

If you want an X470 on any condition but the budget is limited, this is the motherboard for you. It offers excellent features for the price, but as with all cost-effective motherboards, overclocking potential is limited.

– Faizan Ahmed

Buy It If

✅ You’re on a budget: The MSI Gaming Plus offers all of the X470 features at an entry-level price.

✅ You need multiple storage options: It houses two M.2 slots and six SATA ports, with all the expansion slots you would expect from an X470 board.

Don’t Buy It If

❌ You’re looking for heavy overclocking: MSI’s claimed 11-phase setup is misleading, so the motherboard doesn’t support heavy overclocking, but moderate overclocking will be fine.

❌ Red accents on PCB bother you: The red accents on the motherboard’s PCB might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

What Makes It The Best Budget X470 Motherboard?

For the price, MSI has done an excellent job with the specifications of the MSI X470 Gaming. It features a decent selection of rear I/O ports and provides great performance at a low price, entering my list as the Best Budget X470 Motherboard.

How We Selected The Best X470 Motherboards

Selecting these motherboards was no easy task. I carefully considered a variety of factors before picking my top choices:

  • VRM: Voltage Regular modules, also known as VRMs, are an essential part of any device; they are responsible for regulating the flow of current in any component. In this case, the VRMs of a motherboard provide the CPU and other components with the right amount of voltage. Compromising on a VRM can be disastrous, especially if you intend to do any overclocking.
  • Overclocking potential: VRMs also play an important role in overclocking; better VRMs will allow you to reach higher clock speeds. On the other hand, overclocking with inefficient VRMs can be harmful to your processor; it can also reduce the lifespan of your CPU. Most motherboards come with heatsinks responsible for cooling down the VRMs to ensure they run at safe temperatures.
  • Temperatures and Cooling: Temperatures can highly impact the performance of your system, especially if you intend on overclocking it. High temperatures can lead to bottlenecks that reduce your CPU’s clock speeds, resulting in a huge performance loss. Modern motherboards come with adequate cooling solutions to cool down the VRMs and the M.2 slots.
  • Connectivity and Expansion slots: Before finalizing your decision to purchase a motherboard, you need to make sure that the chosen motherboard comes with enough internal connectors and rear I/O ports to satisfy your needs.

FAQs About X470 Motherboards

What is the difference between X470 and the B450?

The X470 chipset offers more PCIe lanes and provides a better overclocking experience thanks to its better VRMs. X470 boards also support SLI and crossfire.

Which is better, X570 or X470?

Simply put, the X570 offers much more when it comes to features and rear I/O ports. Unlike the X470 chipset, the X570 platform also comes with PCIe gen 4 support. Additionally, X570 boards also come with USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports that provide faster transmission rates.

Should I go with X370 OR X470?

While the X370 and X470 chipsets are almost entirely the same, the X470 chipset provides a lot of fixes to the problems that X370 struggled with. X470 also offers a better BIOS compared to the X370, making it a much better option.
