While the Call of Duty franchise has seen various popular entries throughout the last decade, very few games can compare to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 from Treyarch. Having been released in 2012, it is still considered an exceptional title in the FPS genre.
While the game has been left behind after several years, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has recently experienced a massive surge in players, with almost 11K concurrent players playing the game on Xbox.
Why it matters: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is arguably the best game in the franchise, with fans praising its multiplayer mode. Fans of the game will be pleased to hear that the game is once again populated, providing them with an opportunity to play it again.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was one of the last few Call of Duty games to feature an in-game player count menu.
Following Call of Duty: Ghosts, this feature was removed from Call of Duty. Fans can still track player counts on Steam, but this change meant that console player counts could no longer be tracked.
Nonetheless, the game has received massive attention over the last few days. It is important to note that the player count mentioned accounts for the Xbox platform only. As such, the complete numbers are likely even higher.
While the game was originally released for Xbox 360, it can be played on newer consoles, such as Xbox One and the Xbox Series X|S, thanks to backward compatibility. This ease of access has helped the massive surge in player count.
While older Call of Duty games were vulnerable to matchmaking bugs, it appears Microsoft and Activision have fixed the game on Xbox. However, PS3 and PC users may continue to face these problems.
Additionally, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 continues to face various hackers. Previously, this has resulted in security threats for console and PC players, which may still be an issue after the recent update.
Therefore, it might be best to wait for future updates. PC players, in particular, are advised to stay away from older games in the franchise. However, custom server clients like Plutonium can be considered a safe alternative for these older games on the platform.
Other Call of Duty games have also seen a similar increase in player counts, particularly Modern Warfare 2 (2008) and the first Black Ops, which have become heavily populated. Fans of these games can now revisit their favorite entries to relive the good old days.
These changes could be attributed to the ongoing Activision and Microsoft merger, which is expected to be finalized soon. Once the merger is completed, all Call of Duty games, both new and old, are expected to join Game Pass by 2025.
This would make them more widely available for newer consoles, potentially leading to even more players in the coming years.
