Cyberpunk 2077 Fans Feel Betrayed After Shadow of the Erdtree GOTY Nomination

"Phantom Liberty Deserved To Be Nominated In 2023"

Story Highlight
  • Fans are not too happy with The Game Awards nominating Shadow of the Erdtree for Game of the Year.
  • They believe Phantom Liberty was mistreated for not receiving a Game of the Year nomination.
  • Many argue it may not have won the award but still deserved a nomination.

After winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022, Elden Ring secured its second nomination in 2024. This nomination came after a new rule allowed for DLC nominations in the category, changing the landscape of The Game Awards forever.

However, not everyone has been pleased with the outcome. Many fans have begun to discuss the implications of this decision, and various fans have also pointed out that Cyberpunk 2077 deserved similar treatment last year.

Why it matters: Phantom Liberty marked a major comeback for CD Projekt RED, and it restored interest in Cyberpunk 2077 after receiving excellent reviews overall.

On Twitter, fans have argued that Phantom Liberty deserved the same treatment as Shadow of the Erdtree last year. Many believe that DLCs should compete in a completely separate category, but they are in favor of the same rules from 2024 applying to Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC.

I agree completely.

Some fans have even suggested that Phantom Liberty would have taken home Game of the Year if it competed in the category. CDPR’s work received plenty of praise from critics and fans last year, so fans still hold the DLC in high regard.

With that said, last year’s competition was a lot stiffer. Phantom Liberty was also nominated across two categories, best narrative and best performance, last year, but fans believe the expansion was robbed of a Game of the Year nomination.

If DLCs qualify, it’s a no-brainer nominee.

This is not the first time fans have disagreed with The Game Awards. In the past, they debated the decision to include remakes as nominations and argued that Red Dead Redemption 2 deserved to win the ultimate prize in 2018.
