Destiny 2 has been surrounded by controversy recently as it struggles to prove itself a worthy acquisition for Sony. Player counts were also impacted last year, falling below 40K despite the game’s continued support.
Fortunately, Bungie’s latest content release has just breathed new life into Destiny 2 on Steam. The game has reached more than 100K players for the first time in 2024, marking a major resurgence.
Why it matters: Reports have pointed to increasing tension between Sony and Bungie recently, so this should be an encouraging outcome that makes the situation better.
The game reached over 134K players on 8 April this year. This was one day before the release of Into The Light, a new content update that was fairly content-rich despite its status as a free update.
Into The Light was a substitute to keep players engaged until The Final Shape. The latter will be Destiny 2’s major story expansion for June, but Into The Light seems to have done wonders for the game.
Such player counts were last seen in August 2023. Destiny 2 has struggled to reach more than 60K players since then, with the occasional boost to 100K players. Overall, this must be encouraging to see for Bungie.
It is no secret that there is a lot of pressure on the studio at the moment. Following layoffs, the studio needs to meet certain targets for The Final Shape, but it seems there is little to worry about.
As for Into The Light, Destiny 2 has introduced a new PVE mode, more PvP maps, and a new social space. Therefore, this update has been quite well-received.
Recent rumblings have also hinted at the development of Destiny 3. Perhaps these rumors have piqued audience interest, encouraging Steam users to try the current release in anticipation of the eventual sequel.
Nonetheless, Destiny 2 remains a strong first-person shooter for Bungie and PlayStation. As one of the finest live-service games, the title turns seven later this year, hardly showing any signs of slowing down.
