Bethesda Game Studios is nearly finished with Starfield, but the developer’s next ambitious RPG, The Elder Scrolls 6, has already been revealed.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has established itself among the best Western RPGs, but the series has not seen a new entry since Elder Scrolls 5 in 2011. Seven years after the last game, The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced at E3 in 2018.

The game’s announcement has now turned over five years old.

Why It Matters: Elder Scrolls 6 has seemingly disappeared after the initial announcement. This has also led to concerns and questions from fans.

As stated earlier, the developers behind the game are currently working on Starfield, another massive-scale RPG. Starfield is Bethesda’s first new IP in over two decades, carrying the potential to become another hit RPG.

Considering the scale of Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios is likely focused entirely on the game. However, many fans are also curious about Elder Scrolls 6. Todd Howard was also asked about the game’s release date during the Lex Fridman podcast last year.

He said:

“I have a vague idea. I wish it was soon. I wish they didn’t take as long as they do.”

Todd’s response suggested that the game is far from release. Many enthusiastic fans are hoping to see a subtle tease at the Xbox Games Showcase, but it seems highly unlikely.

Elder Scrolls 6 will mark the first Elder Scrolls game after Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda Softworks, and the game is speculated to be an Xbox exclusive similar to Starfield.

Recent job listings also hinted at multiplayer elements in the game. This would be surprising since Elder Scrolls has always been focused on a single-player experience.

Anticipation for the next Elder Scrolls game is high, and Bethesda is facing the challenge of creating a remarkable product that lives up to the series’ reputation.

With modern development timelines, it would not be far-fetched to expect the game to launch after the next Xbox console. Still, the wait could be worth it if the title lives up to the previous games in the franchise.
