Fallout has pioneered RPG experiences for nearly three decades. In 2018, this IP ventured into the multiplayer genre, but Fallout 76 had a very rough launch and was harshly criticized by critics and fans at launch.

However, Bethesda Game Studios didn’t lose hope and continued to work on the title. Five years later, the game’s perception has been completely changed. Continuing its success, Fallout 76 has confirmed that it has crossed over 17 million players.

Why it matters: A live service game is not easy to sustain, but the Fallout franchise has been able to create a strong community around this spin-off.

The official Fallout website confirmed the new milestone. While discussing all of the great moments of 2023 and sharing plans for the future, the blog confirmed the number of players who visited Fallout 76 this year. It stated:

“17 million players have experienced new Fallout tales and characters with Wastelanders.”

The title had 13.5 million players last December. While 2023 was stacked with fantastic releases, Fallout 76 continued to grow and gathered an additional 3.5 million players, helping the title reach a massive milestone.

In addition to the new player count, Bethesda Game Studios discussed new content coming to the game in 2024. More quests, areas to explore, and rewards will continually be added to the game throughout 2024.

Fallout 76 has been through quite the journey. One developer recently admitted its launch was rough, likely due to Bethesda Game Studios feeling infallible at the time. Fortunately, things have taken a turn for the better.

Together with games like Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76 is among the leading live service games for Xbox.

Apart from new content, the game recently received a 60FPS update. Fallout 76 now runs better than ever on current-gen consoles, making it even more compelling for console players.

Following this milestone, the game appears to be in for another successful year. Bethesda Game Studios may also be working on a remaster of Fallout 3, further expanding the IP.
