Gaunter O’Dimm From The Witcher 3 Is Still Among Gaming’s Best Villains

Mirror Master Was Truly Unforgettable!

The Witcher 3 is regarded as one of the best offerings in the industry. Having been released over seven years ago, the RPG has aged like fine wine. CD Projekt Red also exceeded expectations by releasing great DLCs like Hearts of Stone.

Hearts of Stone mainly revolves around Olgierd von Everec, a Redanian noble who is initially considered the main antagonist of the DLC. However, it is later revealed that Gaunter O’Dimm, better known as the Mirror Master, is the primary villain of the DLC.

He uses Geralt to fulfill his contract with Olgierd, and due to his manipulative nature, cunningness, and mysterious demeanor, Gaunter O’Dimm is regarded as a well-written villain, with many considering him one of the best antagonists of gaming.

Why it matters: Gaunter O’Dimm illustrates the studio’s high standards for the franchise and its narrative.

One fan of The Witcher 3 recently took to Reddit, expressing his praise for the villain when playing through the DLC for the first time.

A bit later in the DLC, it is revealed that Gaunter O’Dimm, the Mirror Master, is the true villain, assigning Geralt an almost impossible task to repay his debt after he saved Geralt from a near-death experience.

While Gaunter’s role starts as a minor character in the main game, the DLC fleshes him out and puts him at the forefront. As a part of repaying his debt, Geralt is required to fulfill Olgierd von Everec’s wishes, but in doing so, he unravels the tragic path of Olgierd von Everec’s family and how he traded his heart for power, money, and immortality.

However, there was a catch behind Olgierd von Everec’s deal. After fulfilling his three wishes, the Mirror Master would take his soul in exchange. At this point, players can let him proceed or interfere and save Olgierd von Everec’s life.

During the DLC, Gaunter’s identity as a supernatural being is revealed, possessing powers beyond any known entity. He is often considered akin to the Devil or some form of a malevolent entity by players, although none of this has been confirmed canonically.

His cunningness, mysterious nature, and tricking of Olgierd von Everec allow him to stand above most gaming villains. Eventually, Geralt out-tricks the decades-old being and has the choice to save Olgierd von Everec, but that depends on the players and their morality.

Nonetheless, fans believe this take on the devilish villain archetype was impeccably done.

Gaunter O’Dimm’s gradual but steady revelation as a true villain renders the character truly terrifying from the perspective of players. As such, the antagonist stands as one of the best-written figures in video game history.

Furthermore, it is also interesting that he adheres to the rules and gracefully accepts defeat after losing to Geralt in a riddle, despite being significantly more powerful and even possessing the ability to manipulate time.
