- God of War 3 brings Kratos’ revenge arc to a climactic end with massive, brutal boss fights against the gods of Olympus.
- Even after 14 years, its gameplay and epic scale remain unmatched in the character-action genre.
- The game’s Quick Time Events added a cinematic flair to its battles, setting a high bar that later entries have yet to surpass.
Fans remember that he was a menacing force before Kratos was a calm and reasonable person. The Ghost of Sparta was responsible for wiping out much of the Greek world. Kratos’ revenge arc against the gods of Olympus finally concluded God of War 3.
God of War 3 is my favorite game in the series, especially because of its art style and the conclusion of Kratos’ revenge. Even after 14 years, it has aged so well in terms of gameplay, outdoing most hack-and-slash games of today’s generation.
God of War 3 was the Character-Action genre at its peak, especially because of the large-scale battles and how Kratos finished each God on their own turf. I believe that God of War 3’s boss battles are the best in gaming, even 14 years later.
Why It Matters: It’s remarkable that a 14-year-old game holds so well and even outperforms other games in gameplay and scripted boss battles despite so much technological advancement over the years.
One Of The Best Opening Boss Fights Ever
God of War 2 ended on a cliffhanger after Kratos recruited the Titans to launch a full-scale attack on Olympus. The journey continued with God of War 3, which has one of the most incredible opening gameplay sequences ever.
Fans remember the game’s most iconic boss fight, ironically, is its first one. Kratos’s battle against Poseidon, the God of the Sea, is one of the game’s most bloody battles. Even the scale of the battle is beyond massive for a game that runs on a PS3.
After pulling Poseidon from his enlarged form, Kratos beats the living out of the God of the Sea as he crawls away. I still get chills witnessing that fight, and it’s almost incomprehensible to see how Kratos has changed in these later Norse games.
One Man Army Against Olympus
To think about it, it was just Kratos against the Gods of Olympus and even the Titans later on after getting betrayed by Gaia. Kratos singlehandedly defeated the titans and the gods by himself, picking on each one by one.
Each boss fight was good in its own way. For instance, in the fight with Hercules, Kratos wanted to avoid it since he was his half-brother, but he had to give him the same treatment as the other gods because of his loyalty to Zeus.
The fight against Cronos, the leader of the Titans, was the best in the whole game. This boss fight took it to the next level, fighting against such a huge creature, Kratos, who was just the size of an ant in comparison.
Despite such a huge difference, Kratos still managed to spill Cronos’ guts, stab him in the neck, and stab him once again in the forehead. Considering its scale and grandeur, this is one of the most memorable boss fights in all of God of War games.
The final fight against Zeus was the most satisfying and different from the rest. While the battle ends bloody like any other, the lands were plagued after Zeus’s death. The game ends when Kratos kills himself in an attempt to release hope to the Greek world so they can live on without ever needing the Gods.
Quick Time Events Brought The Best Out Of These Grand Battles
Earlier God of War games stood out with Quick Time Events, which are smooth transitions in large-scale boss battles from one environment to another. Moreover, they take a cinematic approach to make the game feel like you’re not aimlessly throwing your weapons around.
Quick Time Events was a nice change of pace from conventional cutscenes as you had to add your input in these fights, too, offering a more cinematic experience. Everyone knows the iconic “O” pops up at an enemy after downing them and has become a pop culture reference over the years.
While newer God of War games have Quick Time Events, they lack the stability of these battles, where you have to fight against people your size. I was really looking forward to some epic brawls with huge creatures and Gods of the Norse, but newer games failed to deliver on that.
