God of War Ragnarok has finally arrived on PC, reaching a peak of just 22,367 concurrent players on Steam. While this is a solid start, it doesn’t match the launch of its predecessor, God of War (2018), which had 73,529 players at its peak.
Although many were excited about the PC version, overall reviews have been mixed. Players have mostly pointed out issues with technical performance and the unnecessary requirement for a PlayStation Network account to play.
Why it matters: According to Sony, God of Ragnarok sold over 15 million units on PlayStation. It’ll be interesting to see how much revenue the company generates with the PC port after an underwhelming launch.
God of War Ragnarok launches a “Mixed” rating on Steam, with about one-third of players expressing frustration. Many users complained about performance issues, particularly those using mid-range or older computers.
For example, players with graphics cards under 8GB of VRAM were mostly unable to run the game at all. Additionally, some criticized the requirement to create a PSN account, which wasn’t needed for the previous game.
It’s also important to remember that God of War Ragnarok is currently unavailable in many regions where PSN doesn’t exist.
Ragnarok had a quieter launch on PC compared to God of War (2018). When the latter was released in January 2022, it broke records with 73,529 players on its first day.
The game was well-optimized, and the excitement after being exclusive to PlayStation for so long led to very positive reviews, earning it an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam.
On the other hand, God of War Ragnarok didn’t generate the same excitement as its predecessor. Several reasons might explain this. Many players had already played the game on PlayStation, which reduced the hype for its PC launch.
On top of that, the technical issues with Ragnarok’s PC port led to frustrating reviews, especially from players who expected better performance on different setups.
