Cloud Gaming is fairly new and continues to develop at a steady pace. While companies like Microsoft have invested heavily in this segment of the industry, consumer adoption is far from where it needs to be.

Logitech has recently launched a Cloud Gaming handheld, and it was not too long ago that Google also took a huge step into the cloud Gaming market. The Google Stadia launched nearly three years ago and promised a wide variety of games through the streaming service.

However, Google has not found the success that the company sought to achieve. Google has now announced that Stadia is being discontinued on January 18, 2023

Fortunately, a small bit of good news has come out of the situation. Google has decided to honor the Stadia customers through refunds. All Stadia hardware and software purchases through Google will be refunded to the customers, and the company is expecting to be done with the process by mid-January.

Google Stadia general manager, Phil Harrison claims that the service was not as successful as Google had initially hoped. The company invested in the technology to provide audiences with a platform for all kinds of games, but Stadia ultimately failed to live up to expectations.

The company also claims that the technology used for Stadia will not go to waste. Google intends to utilize those innovations for other areas of its offerings. Additionally, Google has not entirely ruled out future involvement in the gaming industry.

The industry has seen an increasing shift toward Cloud Gaming in recent years. Xbox Cloud Gaming has accumulated over 100 million users, and Microsoft is considered the industry leader in this aspect.

Phil Harrison stated that Google is still committed to gaming. This could mean a number of things, but the general manager did not specify future plans. Google could take another shot at Cloud Gaming in the future, but that is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

On the other hand, rival companies continue to invest in Cloud Gaming. With Google out of the way, Microsoft could be looking to become the dominant force in the Cloud Gaming segment. However, Sony and Nvidia are also strong competitors, and should not be counted out just yet.
