GTA No Longer Has Any Competition, Says Take-Two

GTA Is Too Big As A Franchise!

Story Highlight
  • GTA 5 has made around $10 billion since it was released in 2013.
  • According to Take-Two, Call of Duty went toe-to-toe with the franchise at that time.
  • The CEO thinks that there is no proper competition for GTA today since it has become a real outlier.

Grand Theft Auto is unarguably one of the biggest franchises in gaming history. Following a rich legacy, it comes as no surprise that this series sells no matter what, showcasing similar dominance as IPs like Call of Duty and Pokemon.

The latest GTA release from Rockstar, GTA 5, has made over $10 billion in just over a decade. A single title making this much profit proves how well the overall franchise has done.

Due to this, the CEO of Take-Two has claimed that no game in the market can challenge GTA anymore.

Why it matters: Over the past three decades, Rockstar has garnered a massive fandom for its Grand Theft Auto series. This fandom is patiently waiting for the next installment, which will be released in late 2025.

The First Trailer of GTA 6 Managed to Break Many Records Despite Being Released Ahead of Schedule

During the TD Cowen 52nd Annual Anniversary conference, the host asked Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, some questions regarding GTA 5 and 6. The main question the host asked was regarding the success of GTA 6.

The host wanted to know whether the company was confident in taking the franchise to a level where it could generate more revenue and reach. Zelnick responded very passionately and reflected back on GTA 5’s release.

It was sort of neck and neck with Call of Duty at that point. Here we are now with V, 10-11 years later, having done what it has done, we’re a real outlier.

He then went on to declare this series the number-one entertainment property across all industries.

This highlights just how big Grand Theft Auto has grown. A major part of this success comes from GTA Online, which has grown so big that the likes of Call of Duty can no longer compete.

Zelnick also explained how a simple announcement of the trailer from Rockstar could break the internet.

This, again, is backed by facts. At launch, the trailer reached a whopping 93 million views in a span of just 24 hours and later on became gaming’s second biggest trailer. The trailer broke so many records despite being released way ahead of schedule.

So, what Zelnick has said about the franchise’s success and popularity is 100% accurate and hopefully, the next game in the series can live up to the hype. Till then, the studio continues to rake in billions from GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2.
