Avoiding Comparisons With Uncharted & Tomb Raider!

Story Highlights
  • Indiana Jones was revealed with a first-person gameplay perspective recently.
  • The developers state this choice was made to help Indiana Jones stand out from other action-adventure titles.
  • It is also part of MachineGames’ DNA, leading to more efficient development.

After years of anticipation, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle was finally shown during the Xbox Developer Direct, with the gameplay trailer becoming the highlight of the show.

While many were expecting Indiana Jones to be a third-person game, MachineGames has confirmed that Indy’s latest journey is primarily focused on the first-person perspective to stand out from other action-adventure titles like Uncharted and Tomb Raider.

Why it matters: MachineGames excels in first-person gameplay. Releases like Wolfenstein and recent Quake remasters highlight the studio’s proficiency, leading to this choice from the team.

During a recent interview with Lucasfilm, the Game Director at MachineGames, Jerk Gustafsson, was asked if the team tried a third-person perspective while developing the game.

Jerk Gustafsson replied that first-person gameplay is a part of MachineGames’ DNA, encouraging the team to experiment with an immersive gameplay experience through a first-person camera. He further stated:

“It separates our game from many other action-adventure titles, making it a unique experience that you cannot find anywhere else.”

Still, MachineGames did not want to deprive players of a third-person perspective altogether.

Therefore, the game offers a seamless flow between first-person gameplay and third-person traversal. Third-person moments will also be found during cutscenes, with the team offering a blend of both throughout the game.

While the developer did not point to any specific games, Tomb Raider and Uncharted are the obvious first comparisons. Many expected Indiana Jones and The Great Circle to be MachineGames’ take on the Uncharted formula.

However, the team seems to have gone a different route, taking more inspiration from the Indiana Jones movies, focusing on the element of discovering and solving puzzles in addition to the typical action set pieces.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle

MachineGames’ developers believe they are the perfect match for Indiana Jones and The Great Circle. The team hopes to display its admiration for the series in this title, offering fans an experience worth remembering.

According to reports, id Software and Tango Gameworks have also assisted in the development of Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, making it one of the many titles we are excited about.

The game is currently on track to release in 2024, but the studio has yet to confirm an official release date. We expect to see Indiana Jones and The Great Circle showing up again during Xbox’s annual showcase in June later this year.
