James Gunn’s DCU Making Tie-In Games Has Me Excited For DC’s Future

Expert Verified By

With the DCU now taking games more seriously and offering connections with the canonical universe, the possibilities are endless to explore the many characters and stories within DC's comics.

Story Highlight
  • James Gunn’s DCU kicks off in 2025 with Superman: Legacy and will be a new iteration of the universe across all mediums, including video games.
  • DCU will feature tie-in AAA games that will be canon to the universe, opening tons of possibilities to explore untapped lore within DC.
  • The ArkhamVerse will also continue, although it isn’t confirmed whether it’ll be part of the DCU.

James Gunn’s new iteration of the DC universe, DCU, will kick off in 2025 with Superman: Legacy. The DCU will be an entire reboot that goes beyond live-action and animated movies.

The Co-CEO also laid out plans in a way that future video games will tie in with the DCU. Such releases will be part of the AAA industry with a higher budget and good production quality.

The fact that these games will be connected to the DCU makes me even more excited about the future possibilities of exploring fan-favorite settings and superheroes beyond Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Why it matters: Recent superhero titles from DC, including Suicide Squad and Gotham Knights, have been nothing but huge disappointments. Comic book games, in general, haven’t been the best in recent years.

Avatar As A Blueprint For DCU Adaptations

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Shows How A Film Can Be Translated To A Gaming Adaptation

Last year’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was a stunning game from Ubisoft. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was also a tie-in with James Cameron’s Avatar universe, being canon to the franchise.

However, it depicted a spin-off story in the universe, exploring a never-before-seen side of Pandora. It was set in the same universe but didn’t affect the universe’s overarching story.

DC will take a similar approach, likely offering spin-offs that will explore more untapped lore within that universe. The DC lore is way too big to be explored fully within the DCU, so choosing to focus on tie-ins is the perfect way to go.

Endless Possibilities?

L.A. Noire
A Batman Game With L.A. Noire’s Detective Focus Could Be Incredible

The DCU won’t just make movie replicas; I can think of many options for where it can be headed from here. Since Batman will already be in his prime days in the DCU, an LA-Noire detective-esque game from his early days could be a good pitch.

A Green Lantern game in Remedy’s style could be amazing. Imagine an adaptation set outside the Earth, and the player fights aliens while exploring the character’s early days. Fans have also demanded a Constantine adaptation over the years.

The Teen Titans have some of the best superheroes that have such high potential to be translated into a game based on co-op. This would essentially be Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad done right.

Perhaps Superman can finally get some attention, too. The possibilities are endless!

More Arkham Games?

Batman Arkham Knight
Batman Arkham Knight Ended The Series On A High Note

James Gunn previously confirmed that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League isn’t the last of what we’ll see from the Arkham universe. Since Kevin Conroy’s death, a new VR project, Batman: Arkham Shadows, has been announced, with Roger Craig Smith returning as the voice of Batman.

Perhaps the Arkham Universe will get a soft reboot and tie in with the DCU this time? Or it’ll keep existing as an else-world universe. Only time will tell.

The best part is that James Gunn’s leadership will ensure these games don’t end like Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. I won’t even talk about how much wrong Rocksteady’s latest release did to the entire DC universe.

There’s still some time before we see an announcement of a DCU game since the universe is currently being planned out. Wonder Woman is the only adaptation currently under development and most probably won’t be a part of the DCU since the game has been in development for several years now.
