Another Major Title Skipping Physical Release!

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is three months away from release, with the popular character, Kazuma Kiryu, returning for another adventure.

While fans of the series are excited about the title, those who prefer physical copies may find themselves disappointed. A recent tweet from RGG Studio has led to speculation about the latest Like a Dragon title skipping a physical release in the West.

Why it matters: Physical media is slowly being replaced in the digital age. This has also carried over to the gaming industry, with a growing focus on digital games and hardware that can only utilize digital media.

According to RGG Studio, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will be available to download in three months. While this is to be expected, the tweet does not say anything about the physical disc-based copy.

On the other hand, a physical release has already been confirmed for PlayStation consoles in Japan. As such, RGG Studio’s recent message likely means that the developer is skipping a physical launch in Western countries.

Previously, Kamurocho Bros made a similar claim, hinting at the lack of a physical release for the game. According to Kamurocho Bros, various retailers have confirmed this information.

While this is disappointing, it marks another step toward the inevitable death of physical games. Recently, major AAA titles like Alan Wake 2 have accelerated this complete shift toward digital media.

Remedy Entertainment has claimed that the lack of a physical release helps to keep the game’s price in check.

Nonetheless, the latest Like a Dragon title will arrive on all platforms soon. Similar to its predecessors, fans can expect plenty of action and an emotional narrative as players learn more about Kazuma Kiryu.
